The Angry Birds Movie 2 - Still the Same Hilarious Comedy Based on that Popular Game

This movie actually premiered in Indonesian theaters on Friday but as me and my wife were invited to a special screening of a brand new movie to be released this week, we only got the time to see this yesterday. We chose to do it in the cinema at Grand Indonesia where we could continue with another movie that we had not seen eiter. Ok I'll just proceed with the film now.

Brief Story Line

After the events from The Angry Birds Movie, Red (Jason Sudeikis - Colossal, Hall Pass etc) who was now considered as hero was always protecting the island from pranks by their neighbor Pigs led by Leonard (Bill Hader - Power Rangers movie version etc). But when a new kind of danger looming the two islands, Leonard asked Red to join forces against that danger which was coming from a group of eagles led by the ruthless Zeta (Leslie Jones - Ghostbusters 2016 version etc).

With his best friends the very quick Chuck (Josh Gad - A Dog's JourneyBeauty and the Beast live version etc) and Bomb (Danny McBride - Alien: Covenant, Tropic Thunder etc), Red and Leonard went on a mission to stop Zeta from endangering their islands. They were also joined by the very intelligent bird named Silver (Rachel Bloom - Crazy Ex-Girlfriend TV series etc), the creator of gadgets Garry the Pig (Sterling K. Brown - The Predator etc) and Courtney (Awkwafina - Crazy Rich Asians etc), plus Mighty Eagle (Peter Dinklage - Three Billboard Outside Ebbing, Missouri, Game of Thrones TV series etc).

So could these frenemies unite to save their islands? Find them all in this hilarious comedy movie based on popular game.

End of Brief Story Line

This was a surprise for me. When I saw the movie yesterday, I did not have high expectations. I saw the trailer few times earlier and thought there seemed to be few quite funny scenes, but I did not think it would be hilarious almost all the time. Yes, from start to finish, my wife and I laughed quite a lot out loud (together with most of the audience as well). Although what I noticed was that the comedic scenes could sometimes be a bit cheesy, but generally we could chuckle or at least smile.

There were also a lot of cute moments especially when the movie shifted their scenes to show us the 3 very adorable bird children with their sweet child voices. They always managed to give us delightful feeling. And they appeared quite a lot of time too. The story itself did not feel too forced to my opinion. I thought the writers had a wonderful idea of adding a third island into the picture that made these two enemies unite and become temporary friends (The enemy of my enemy, right?).

A lot of credit also had to be given to the voice cast who performed their works admirably. They were awesome in portraying their characters and the new additions were pretty memorable as well. Some of the scenes that made us laugh were also contributed by them. But one character did not have a lot of screen time here, i.e.Terence (now voiced by Nolan North and previously by Sean Penn). The new character that I thought was really funny was Debbie (Tiffany Haddish - The Secret Life of Pets 2 etc), with her unique appearance which left quite an impression for me and my wife.

And there were also tons of nice songs in the film, just like in the first movie where it had few famous 80s and 90s music. The animation was done very nicely with the birds and pigs reminded us again of this popular game few years ago from Rovio. The 3D version would seem amazing, but I think there was no 3D available in Indonesian theaters. There was no mid or post end credit scenes here. From what I experienced till the end, the movie felt suitable for all ages, with young kids as the preferred audience, but adults who could appreciate this kind of comedy should also be able to enjoy it, like my wife and I did.

Overall this was a movie strictly for fun. It was quite light, with very few dramatic moments. It had a lot of moments where we could be entertained by the comedic situation and be delighted with the appearance of the adorable young birds. We could also have fun by listening to some of the nice songs as well. So if you enjoyed the first movie, then I believe you should be satisfied with this one as well. However, if you are not a fan of the original film, then this one might not be to your liking, especially with similar style of story & comedy. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
