47 Meters Down: Uncaged - A Pretty Decent Horror Survival Movie

When I saw the title to this movie, I immediately remember the film that my wife and I saw 2 years ago titled 47 Meters Down and it is indeed the sequel (at least according to Wikipedia). As it played in the theater nearest to our home, we did not hesitate to buy the 7 PM show. So let's get ready to see some sharks now.

Brief Story Line

The family of Grant (John Corbett - My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Sex and the City TV series etc), his wife Jennifer (Nia Long - Big Momma's House, Are We There Yet? etc) and their teenage daughters Mia (Sophie NĂ©lisse - Mama, Close etc) & Sasha (Corinne Fox) just moved to a new city in Mexico.

One day, the girls and their high school friends Alexa (Brianne Tju - Light as a Feather TV series etc) and Nicole (Sistine Stallone) went for a swim in a remote area. They also tried diving into the ruins of an old civilization. Unbeknownst to them, there was the danger of the great white shark inside this place.

So could these girls survive and live to tell the story? Find them all in this horror survival movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Like in the original movie, this one was focusing on the survival of the people from the shark attacks. The formula was quite similar to that 2017 movie, where there were 2 sisters as the main lead (except this time they were added by two more teenage girls). But in terms of intensity and suspense, this one was at par with the first movie. Btw, there was a different opinion whether this movie was actually the sequel or just having similar theme. As I said above, Wikipedia mentioned it as a sequel but other people did not have the same view, most likely because it did not have any cast from the first movie at all. For me it doesn't matter as the sharks were the main "stars" anyway.

The first 15-20 minutes felt a bit overly long for me, especially looking at some teenage girls just had fun in that remote beautiful place. But once they started to dive into the dark labyrinth-like place, the audience (especially my wife) were always on their toes. The movie was classified as horror survival movie as there was indeed a lot of jump scares scene like in horror genre. Even I got surprised more than once despite having myself ready for such scenes. Obviously the rest of the audience screamed a lot as well (my wife was one of those who screamed the loudest).

One thing that I quite like about this film was the fact they did not stop giving us surprises. Just when we thought we could sigh a relief, the suspense was felt again and it was really done till the end of the film. It had around 90 minutes duration where 2/3 was filled with the intense moments. It did not have any mid or post end credit scene.

My wife and I saw this in the studio which was not our favorite as the sound system was too standard. And apparently it had an impact on our pleasure, since the sound effects felt a bit flat and did not provide the best effects, especially during the jump scare moments. However, during the few moments of silence, it felt great. Oh the film also had some nice background music, including one famous song from the 1988 by Roxette titled The Look.

For a survival horror movie, I thought this one is actually not bad. As long as we do not expect intelligent scenario and do not really mind the very rough acting skills of the girls (few were having their acting debut in here), we should be able to enjoy the film. To be honest, in term of story, I thought the original one was better but that one had an ending that was unpredictable while this one was pretty standard. This is a movie purely for fun and just to pump our adrenaline a bit. Probably kind of like going through an attraction in a theme park where we could laugh and felt relief after finishing the ride. So if you are OK with those above, you could certainly see this one and have fun.

Happy watching!
