(TV SERIES) The Boys Season 1 - A Dark and Twisted Series that Would Reshape the Superhero Genre

I noticed about this series while I was reading some random entertainment news and felt it had a very interesting plot. With only 8 episodes in the first season plus a high critical & audience rating, I was really intrigued to watch it. Well what was the story all about? Let us find out more below.

Brief Story Line

Set in the world where superheroes were a common phenomenon, several high profile heroes were grouped as The Seven which was led by their most famous and strongest hero Homelander (Antony Starr - Banshee TV series). Some of The Seven members were also very popular such as Queen Maeve (Dominique McElligott - House of Cards TV series etc), the speedster A-Train (Jessie Usher - Independence Day: Resurgence etc), and The Deep (Chace Crawford - Gossip Girl TV series etc) who could breathe underwater. Their latest member was Annie (Erin Moriarty - Blood Father etc) aka Starlight. The Seven and some of the lesser known superheroes were part of a large corporation of Vought International, with their Senior VP Madelyn (Elisabeth Shue - Death Wish 2018 version, The Saint etc) who was instrumental in ensuring they were huge success and making profit for the company.

Meanwhile, after an incident relating to a superhero affected a young man named Hugh (Jack Quaid - Plus One etc), he was somehow "enlisted" by a mysterious guy Billy Butcher (Karl Urban -  Thor: RagnarokPete's Dragon etc) to start looking for proof that superheroes were not as clean as they were shown. Together with Billy's old friends Frenchie (Tomer Kapon) and Marvin aka MM (Laz Alonso) and later a mysterious girl (Karen Fukuhara - Suicide Squad etc), they start to fight with The Seven and try to uncover a major secret involving the superheroes. The group would be referred to as The Boys.

So how would the story proceed? Find them all in this exciting and very dark brand new series.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow, this series was really fantastic. It had been a while since I watched a series involving superheroes which was so dark and twisted, not to mention it was a bit gore and having quite a number of illicit nudity & violent scenes. I mentioned earlier that the plot was the factor that made me intrigued to give a try. In a world where superheroes were supposed to be the ones saving us and be the best version of humans, here we would be shown that some superheroes were caught up in their status and were very corrupted with some sociopath tendencies as well.

Meanwhile the protagonists were people who had to fight against these superheroes using whatever abilities they had as people without powers. The Boys had to run their "operations" under the shadow without the support from the law and were so contradictory with The Seven who were in the light and supported by the people who saw them as the good guys. The other element that attracted me was the mystery which was revealed little by little with some surprising twists shown several times.

Obviously the series would not have been wonderful had it not been for the awesome cast who performed their roles convincingly. I loved the chemistry among all The Boys with each of them having their own personal problem. The introduction of every member were done so smoothly and not in a rush that I was really enjoying this part. I loved Karl Urban's character of Butcher and Tomer Kapon's Frenchie the best. As for the Seven, there were many well done portrayal of the characters but the ones who really impressed me was Antony Starr's Homelander and surprisingly Chace Crawford's The Deep. Ooh, Elisabeth Shue was also really amazing as this corporate person. Btw, the first season also had some well known special guest stars like Simon Pegg (Mission: Impossible Fall Out and its predecessors etc) and Haley Joel Osment (The Sixth Sense, Pay It Forward etc). So in terms of cast, this one did not have shortage of strong actors and actresses. It even had few famous people who appeared as themselves.

This series was based on a popular comic books of the same title, written by Garth Ennis and illustrated by Darick Robinson published by Dynamite Entertainment. The funny thing that I personally noticed were few of the superheroes seemed like the ones from DC comics. Queen Maeve seemed like Wonder Woman, while Homelander felt like Superman, The Deep was really like Aquaman and so on. The comic had been concluded after 72 issues. I am not sure if in the future the series would conclude similarly to the comic books or they would continue or cancelled (stranger things have happened) prior to its finish. The series was developed by Eric Kripke (A very familiar name for me as he was the creator of 1 of my most favorite series Supernatural and Timeless) which would almost guarantee a well made show.

For a series that have superheroes in it, there were some actions involved with pretty good visual effects. However, this is not the kind of superheroes series with one villain in every episode, but more like an action drama series with 1 major plot plus several sub plots. The show which aired in Amazon (Prime Video) had various duration between 55-66 minutes in its 1st season. I loved the pilot and second episode the best with the season finale being its highlight. One thing though, somehow I sensed that the 6th and 7th episodes were a bit slow and less intense. Personally I would have liked it better if the intensity was maintained continuously. I also mentioned above that there were some scenes which were pretty violent and illicit, making this a series more suitable for adults just as it was shown prior to the start of each episode. And it was quite a serious and heavy, not having too much comedic or light moments type.

Overall this was a really satisfying & entertaining series. It was just as advertised and made me look at the superheroes genre differently. I would recommend to watch this for fans of drama with such quality. Just be warned that this is not your ordinary type of superheroes series.

Happy watching!
