Brief Story Line
Three years after the events of the first movie, Nora Tidemann (Ine Maria Wilmann) had quit her previous job and lived in seclusion till her old friend Andreas Isaksen (Kim S. Falck-Jørgensen) sought her advice on something related with her expertise. Nora later met with a group of scientists that included Andreas' wife Sigrid (Karoline Viktoria Sletteng Garvang) and few others led by Marion Rhadani (Sara Khorami).
When a different troll appeared in Norway and was heading to the city of Trondheim, Nora and the research team had to work together once again with their old friend Major Kris Holm (Mads Sjøgård Pettersen) & the army to save the people.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
If you have read a lot of my earlier posts, you would know that I am a sucker for a monster movie. Obviously just by looking at the poster, it was clear there was going to be a monster mash in here which brought a lot of excitement. Now this film actually offered more than that. While other monster vs monster (or similar gigantic creatures/robots) movies focused more on them and the humans were just distraction, I thought this one actually gave plenty of portion to the people but in a good way. For me it was quite refreshing and made it more interesting.
The story was pretty standard to my opinion and originality was definitely not the best part as clearly pointed out by the negative views of audience. However I still thought the characters were nicely written especially for Andreas and Ingrid. Amazingly almost all of the main cast reprised their roles in this sequel. The addition of the character Marion Rhadani was OK, though I kind of missed Nora's father Tobias (not the younger version here). Apart from those names above, there were few support cast like Ola G. Furuseth as Prime Minister Brinchmann, Anne Krigsvoll as Esther who worked at the Nidaros Cathedral and several others.
This sequel was still directed by Roar Uthaug and written by Espen Aukan. I read that this movie was the largest produced film in the Nordic countries. And I think it was clearly shown with the wonderfully done visual effects involving the Trolls and the destruction of the building. The beautiful scenery of Trondheim and the Nidaros Cathedral made me admire Norway more and became another list of countries for me and my wife to visit in future. Unfortunately though, critics were not too impressed with this sequel and I was a bit surprised with some of the negative comments from audience cause I actually enjoyed this movie even more than the original.
For a movie that focused on large monsters and humans, I thought this one was entertaining. It might not be the most original kind (it even adapt a bit of Indiana Jones element aside from few Hollywood movies) but the lovely scenery, the awesome special effect and pretty engaging characters made this an enjoyable one. Oh there was a mid end credit scene which I thought was a teaser for a third movie which should be interesting. So if you are in the mood for monster mash, then you could certainly give this a try. Don't miss out on watching the first one though to better appreciate this sequel which is also available on Netflix (and became the most watched non-English film at the time of writing). Happy watching!
