(2022) Troll - A Norwegian Mythical Creature Movie with Some Awesome Special Effects

I completely forgotten that this movie was going to be released on Netflix few days ago and realized it a bit late. But between new movies released in various platforms and full days out of the house during weekend, I only got the chance to watch it last night. All right, why don't I just get right to it.

Brief Story Line

When a railroad was being built through Dovre mountain in Norwegia, it resulted a quite major catastrophe in the area. The Prime Minister Moberg (Anneke von der Lippe) together with team of people from various divisions in the government were trying to find out the reason and how to solve it. Moberg's advisor Andreas (Kim Falck) decided to enlist the help of paleontologist professor Nora Tidemann (Ine Marie Wilmann) to join the team.

Captain Kris (Mads Sjøgård Pettersen) from the military was later assigned to assist Nora and Andreas to investigate, while they also sought the help from Nora's father Tobias (Gard B. Eidsvold) who was a folklore expert. It was later found out that everything was caused by a mythical creature called Troll who wreak havoc across the land and heading towards the capital Oslo. Now Nora and the others have to find ways to avert the danger as time was running out before the troll reached Oslo.

So how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

The reason why I was interested in watching this movie was due to the trailer that was shown on Netflix few weeks earlier. As a fan of movies about large monsters, obviously I had to give this a try. And frankly I was really not disappointed. This Norwegian movie really had strong Hollywood blockbuster vibe, with the awesome special effects of the enormous Troll, the action sequence, suspense and even few dramatic moments. I was truly amazed by the quite realistic make of Troll which reminded me of the classic King Kong.

This movie did not take too long for the exciting things to occur and despite never seen any of the main cast before, I felt they did their part nicely. Ine Marie Wilmann and Gard B. Eidsvold seemed like the perfect choice as the paleontologist and her father respectively with their convincing chemistry. I also like Kim Falck as the advisor as he provided few comical moments. There were also few support cast but the one that caught my attention was definitely Karoline Viktoria Sletteng Garvang as Sigrid (likely you would feel the same way if you see her actions in here).

The director of this movie was Roar Uthaug whose prior experience included directing the 2018 Tomb Raider, The Wave and few others. He also served as the writer together with Espen Aukan. Btw, the sequel of The Wave titled The Quake was the only Norwegian movie I had ever seen in the cinema, apart from the Netflix original series Ragnarok. Once again I am very thankful that because of Netflix, I was able to broaden my horizon by watching films/series from other countries which otherwise would not have been available easily in Indonesia.

As a monster movie, I thought this one was interesting enough. It had the intensity of human vs monster and some nicely done visual effects with a simple story but pretty engaging characters. The musical background was very good as it managed to provide the effects perfectly in most situations, like during the suspenseful moment or during the climax. Its duration of 101 minutes which I normally would consider too short for such movie, surprisingly felt just great. Oh btw there was a brief mid end credit scene which was quite intriguing. So if you are fans of movie about huge monster, then this should be enjoyable for you.
