(2025) The Great Flood - Might Have Been A More Entertaining Movie If It Stick to its Disaster Premise

Once again I watched a new movie released by Netflix on Friday. It was something that has caught my attention since few weeks ago when it was put under Coming Soon section. OK then, I'll just get started with it.

Brief Story Line

Gu An-na (Kim Da-mi - Nine Puzzles TV series, The Witch: Part 1 and 2 etc) was awaken in the morning by his young son Ja-in (Kwon Eun-song - Citizen of a Kind, Blind TV series etc) who kept on asking her to play. To her surprise, An-na realized that the heavy rain had resulted to some water beginning to flood her apartment unit on the 3rd floor. Lucky for her, a security guy named Son Hee-jo (Park Hae-soo - Butterfly TV series, Phantom etc) contacted An-na and tried to take her to safety.

However the way to safety was obviously not so easy, especially with the water kept on rising and many distractions along the way.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

It has been quite a while since I saw a disaster movie. So when this one was released, I was pretty excited to watch it yesterday. And frankly the film started promising with a simple but clearly intense plot of having so much water flooding your home. The first half hour or so was pretty suspenseful with few very brief emotional moments, though there were several dialogues that made me wonder or rather worry the story might be different from what I expected.

And pretty soon it turned out to be right. The movie suddenly changed its premise from survival of a disaster to something unexpected. At first I was rather annoyed cause I did not anticipate it when I planned to watch this. As it progressed, I was still willing to go along with it since I was curious how it would end. Despite a plot that felt like taken from a Hollywood movie starring Tom Cruise (I am sure you know which one I meant), I thought it was intriguing. Unfortunately though, the ending was not satisfying for me. I could understand why they did it that way, but it didn't make me pleased.

I am sure that I would have loved this movie better if it stick to its disaster & survival premise instead of combining it with the sci-fi element. Perhaps it was my own mistake for not finding out more info of the movie cause it was already stated by Netflix that the film was not solely of one genre. Anyway, the movie had its premiere in Busan International Film Festival in September 2025. Not sure why it took so long to be released considering the movie wrapped up its production by January 2023. The movie was directed by Kim Byung-woo (Omniscient Reader: The Prophecy, The Terror Live etc) and written by him together with Han Ji-su.

The cast here especially Kim Da-mi was quite convincing in her role. But my admiration goes to the child actor Kwon Eun-song whom I thought was brilliant. His facial expressions in various scenes were just awesome. Park Hae-soo seemed to be quite enjoying his success as he was cast in plenty of other movies and series in the past few years, though his performance here was just so so to my opinion. There were few people in minor capacity here such as Jeon Hye-jin (Revolver, Mother and Mom TV series etc) as An-na's boss Lim Hyeon-mo, Jeon Yu-na (The Kidnapping Day TV series, Dirty Money etc) as Ji-su and several others. The film's duration was 108 minutes including closing credits without any post end credit scene. It's not too long for a disaster movie which usually would be in the region of 2 hours.

In the end, I was not really satisfied watching this movie due to its unexpected combination with sci-fi element. I only enjoyed the first half hour of the film, and beyond that I kind of lose interest. Now I am not saying that I hate sci-fi cause if you have read my previous posts, you would know that I am major fan of that. However, this movie was not one of my favorite in that genre. So if you are interested in watching survival of a disaster film, then you need to manage your expectation. I am not even sure my wife, the hard core K-drama & movies fan would enjoy it either. However, if you are curious to see what the story was all about, or just want to see some decent special effects plus nice acting by Kim Da-mi and Kwon Eun-song, then you are welcome to give it a try.
