Chainsaw Man - The Movie: Reze Arc - Wonderful Story Combined with Great Action Animation that Would Make You Like Denji Even Better

When this movie was released in Indonesian cinemas, I was still having a long overseas holiday trip with my wife and did not have the chance to see it after I returned. So I had to wait till it's available via online streaming. Few days ago, it was finally released in Catchplay+, albeit with a premium special price. Anyway yesterday I decided to watch it. OK here's more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

After the events of the first season, Denji (Toya Kikonosuke) was assigned by his boss Makima (Kusunoki Tomori) with a new temporary partner, the devil Beam (Hanae Natsuki) while Power (Ai Fairouz) was having her excess blood drained. Meanwhile Aki Hayakawa (Sakata Shogo) was working together with Angel Devil (Uchida Maaya).

During one heavy rain day, Denji was taking shelter in a phone booth when suddenly a girl later on revealed herself as Reze (Ueda Reina) also went inside there. Denji was attracted to Reze and started to take interest in her, despite his personal conflict of betraying his crush on Makima. As he began to develop relationship with Reze, a huge danger in the form of vicious devil was targeting Denji's heart.

So what would happen with Denji and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I got to admit that when Chainsaw Man series was released, I was not that interested to watch as I found the main character to be weird looking. Besides there were already so many anime series available in various streaming series so I only wanted to focus in few of them. But then I read plenty of positive comments which made me quite intrigued. Hence I gave it a try few months ago and was glad that I did as the series was indeed really good with wonderful story, great action and likable characters.

Obviously I was interested in the movie cause it was direct continuation from the first season plus all the glowing praise. Frankly after seeing this film, I could understand all the hype. I did find the love story to be engaging and provided a sweet but sad and emotional feeling. In fact I liked it better than what Denji was feeling for Makima (that one felt a bit like lust, though it was sometimes funny watching him behaving like what he did around her). Anyway, despite not having full picture of the plot, I could already foresee how it would develop. However, this was one of those movies where the journey towards the end was very worth it even if I know how it would end.

The animation Itself felt a bit different from the series. After reading more info, apparently it was due to the characters designer Sugiyama Kazutaka and director Tatsuya Yoshihara decided to change them a bit to reflect the style of the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto (author of Fire Punch). The original cast from the first season reprised their roles in the movie, with few new characters (Beam was the most hilarious one and provided some needed lighter moments here). Oh the film had duration of 100 minutes including closing credit. There was a very nice song playing in the background titled "Jane Doe" by Yonezu Kenshi and Utada Hikaru. Personally I like that song better than the theme song "Iris Out" by Yonezu. There was also a nice post end credit scene but not a teaser for subsequent film/season.

For an anime action movie, this one would definitely satisfy fans of them as the animation was amazing and the intense action sequence was just awesome. It did take a while before the action started but the opening one third was fun to watch. Of course you can only appreciate this movie if you have watched the anime series, otherwise you would be at a lost trying to understand the story. This is not a one-off anime movie that could be enjoyed by someone not familiar at all. I believe the huge box office performance (> USD 150 million) was contributed by fans of the series and manga.

Overall this is an enjoyable film that made me like Denji and Aki even more. I know that it's very early at the moment, but it seems my admiration to Makima had decreased a bit, although her strength and ability was still the best quality so far. I had a pretty great time watching this one on TV, though I bet watching it in the cinema with good sound system would probably be more entertaining. Regardless though, it was still a nice experience and definitely a must see if you are fans of Chainsaw Man

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
