Brief Story Line
Few years after the events in Creed II, Adonis "Donnie" Creed (Michael B. Jordan - Black Panther, Without Remorse etc) decided to retire from boxing to focus on his wife Bianca (Tessa Thompson - Men In Black: International, Sorry to Bother You etc) and their young daughter Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), while staying close to Donnie's adoptive mother Mary Anne (Phylicia Rashad - Good Deeds etc). Donnie had become a successful promoter and managing Delphi Boxing Academy with his old trainer Duke (Wood Harris - Empire TV series etc). He was in the midst of promoting Felix Chavez (José Benavidez Jr.) to fight against Viktor Drago (Florian Munteanu - Shang-Chi and the Legends of Ten Rings etc).
However, his peaceful life was disturbed when Donnie's old friend Dame (Jonathan Majors - Ant-man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Devotion etc) who recently got out from prison, was asking his help to be a world boxing champ. Donnie was soon caught in a dilemma as he felt he owed his life to Dame.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
As my wife and I enjoyed the previous movies (both of us preferred the second compared to the first one), we were obviously intrigued to see the third movie. And frankly I thought the story was not too far fetched and still interesting, especially looking at the close relationship of Donnie's family with their cute daughter Amara in particular. And the re-appearance of his old friend Dame certainly made the conflict felt stronger.
With the progressing of the story, it would be clear that the movie would be focusing on how Donnie had to deal with his dark past and do what he did best, which was boxing. I personally felt the story was really well told and made us really invested because the characters were really engaging. And the plenty of boxing scenes certainly helped in making it more fun to watch. This time I actually felt the drama and sports were quite balanced, making it all the more entertaining.
I really have to applaud Michael B. Jordan who did a great job in directing this movie in his directorial debut and also the writers Ryan Coogler (director of the first movie), Keenan Coogler and Zach Baylin. The cast were convincing in their performance, like Tessa Thompson as the really supportive wife, Phylicia Rashad as the loving mother, and Jonathan Majors as well (who funnily enough my wife did not recognize in his early appearance). Oh, she also liked the realistic effects of the fights and we both enjoyed watching them with all the dramatic moments. There were even few stylish scenes during the climax fight too.
I was also entertained by the wonderful sound effects that were truly felt during the movie, like the songs in the background, or the amazing sound of the boxing match which made us feel we were there watching it together with the audience. The movie's duration of 116 minutes somehow did not feel overly long. There was no mid or post end credit scene here but we could enjoy the music during the closing credits and see the names involved in the making of the movie. I actually saw several people playing as themselves like the reporter and boxer. I read on the internet that there would likely be a fourth Creed movie which would be interesting to see.
Overall we liked this movie and enjoyed it because of the nice blend of the drama and the boxing, the engaging characters and the story. There were few powerful moments here and one emotional scene that did affect my wife. Oh btw, there was one surprising scene that she was able to guess again. One character that I missed here was Rocky Balboa (although Sylvester Stallone was credited as producer). For those who are unaware, this movie is the ninth installment of the famous Rocky franchise and I think they can bring other children of the original characters in future installment (if they choose to do so). So if you like watching sports drama then I think this one would be to your liking.
Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
