(TV SERIES) The Recruit Season 1 - A Fun and Exciting Spy Adventure Series with Touches of Humor and a bit of Action

This series was actually released on Netflix back in December 2022, but I opted to see other series first and ended up forgotten about it and lost interest. Two days ago though, after finishing something else, I finally decided to give this a try as it was shown that the series was renewed for second season. So it must be good enough to warrant for renewal. Anyway, I finished this last night and here's more on the series.

Brief Story Line

Owen Hendricks (Noah Centineo - Black Adam, The Perfect Date etc) who was just graduated from law school became a new recruit in CIA. After two days of work, he was given the task of reviewing graymails (mails from people threatening to disclose secrets of the agency). As he reviewed them, Owen noticed one mail from a woman named Max Meladze (Laura Haddock - Transformers: The Last Knight, White Lines TV series etc) who was in prison for murder and felt it was a credible threat.

Upon discussing with his boss Nyland (Vondie Curtis-Hall - Daredevil TV series etc), Owen was instructed to find out more and clear the threat. However, it was not as easy as he thought would be, especially since his senior colleagues Lester (Colton Dunn - Superstore comedy series etc) and Violet (Aarti Mann) were trying to sabotage his work. It was also difficult for Owen to handle the task at hand since he could not share with his roommates Hannah (Fivel Stewart - Umma etc) and Terence (Daniel Quincy Annoh).

As the work became harder, Owen had to find the best way to finish his assignment without endangering his and his friends life. So what would happen to Owen? You could find out in the first season of this series.

End of Brief Story Line

Well that was surprisingly very fun. I thought that the series would be the standard spy story and probably like workplace comedy, but it turned out to be much more than that. It focused on the lead character, the charming and likable Owen Hendricks who was just a lawyer working for the CIA and thought he would be working behind desk all the time. However, his assignment was anything but simple and it was so complicated that he had to run across several locations in the space of few days.

As the story progressed, we would be shown how challenging Owen's job was as he had to juggle between working a case while trying to avoid being manipulated by the senior co-workers. Not to mention the threats by dangerous operating agents within CIA. And throughout the whole season, we could see Owen used all his intelligence, wit, quick thinking and charm to work his way out of this specific task. It was so exciting looking at him doing all those that I could not stop watching the series. Which was why I managed to finish it in just two days time. Obviously having only 8 episodes also helped, even though it had duration between 50-58 minutes per episode.

I generally like all the episodes of the first season, but if I had to make a choice, my favorite one was definitely the season finale. Not only because it had the most action and Owen had grown so much in the last 7 episodes, but also because it had few surprises including that special guest star. Aside from those names I mentioned above, there were also additional cast like Kristian Bruun (Orphan Black TV series etc) as Owen's colleague Janus, Angel Parker (Runaways TV series etc) as agent Dawn, Byron Mann (Skyscraper etc) as agent Xander and Kaylah Zander as Amelia, another one of Owen's co-worker. All of them really made the story became more interesting.

During the opening and closing credits, I could not see if the series was based on anything. Hence Alexi Hawley (creator of The Rookie TV series and executive producer of Castle TV series) who created the series should be admired for his creativity. Btw, all the episodes had an acronym for their title which I only found out after reading what those acronyms were for. Oh just so you know, there were so many things left unresolved by the end of the season and it also have cliffhanger ending. I am unclear if the series producer already knew it would be renewed so they purposely ended it that way, or they just gamble on it. Whatever it was, fortunately it was renewed, otherwise people would curse for wasting the time on something that would never be finished like many other series in Netflix.

Overall to me this was an enjoyable spy adventure series. It's got a bit of adventure, comedy, action, excitement and it was also fun looking at Noah Centineo portraying this role. Laura Haddock was quite awesome too as she played the character who could be ruthless at one point but showed a completely different side at other times. And of course those people in the agency like Lester, Violet and Janus provided some humor as well. So if you are looking for a fun spy adventure series with those attributes, then you can give this a try. As long as you do not expect a sophisticated kind of spy like James Bond, then you should be fine.
