Brief Synopsis
After hearing Kraglin (Sean Gunn - Gilmore Girls TV series etc) told the story of how Yondu (Michael Rooker - Love and Monsters etc) ruined Christmas for Peter (Chris Pratt - Jurassic World: Dominion, Onward etc), Mantis (Pom Klementieff - Thunder Force, Ingrid Goes West etc) and Drax (Dave Bautista - My Spy, Stuber etc) were discussing on how to give Peter the perfect gift. They later decided to go to earth to "bring" Peter's childhood hero Kevin Bacon as Christmas present.
As you would have guessed it, there would be so many things gone wrong during this special mission that Mantis and Drax were doing. So how would the story conclude? You can find out in this TV special.
End of Brief Synopsis
Watching this TV movie was a really fun experience as we got to see Mantis and Drax trying to pull off a ridiculous mission of providing the perfect gift, especially when they did not realize by doing so they were actually kidnapping a person, regardless of their noble cause. It was nice to see Mantis given larger role in here and her chemistry with Drax was so enjoyable to watch with their bantering. Many times I chuckled due to their behaviors (the scenes involving Christmas ornaments were just priceless).
Meanwhile Kevin Bacon looked like he had so much fun in here. He played the fictionalized version of himself where his appearances in previous movies were mentioned a lot. The comedy that involved him seemed to come so naturally, particularly all the scenes where he had to face Mantis and Drax. Oh btw, I realized later that Kyra Sedgwick (real wife of Kevin Bacon) also provided the voice on the phone as his wife in the movie.
Aside from the people I mentioned above, most of the cast from Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 also appeared in here, like Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and teenage Groot (Vin Diesel). All of them added the fun elements in this movie despite their screen time were not as much as Mantis and Drax. Being a Christmas movie, this one also had few Christmas songs with two of them were sang by Old 97's band in the early part and before the end. And obviously it would not be a wonderful Christmas special if there was no touching moment. There was one moment towards the end that I thought was really nice.
For a TV movie that only had 42 minutes, I thought it sufficiently covered everything. From the comedy, the Christmas spirit, the touching moment and even few action scenes with decent special effects. James Gunn was really the perfect man to do this special as he had done magnificently in the previous 2 films. He wrote and directed this special and gotten a lot of praise for his work here. So if you are fans of Guardians of the Galaxy and you want to enjoy a funny Christmas special, then this one should be a nice option. Even if it did not seem to have any direct impact on the large Marvel Cinematic Universe story arc, it was still entertaining to watch them for fun.
Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
