(TV SERIES) Peacemaker Season 1 - An Amazing Series Based on DC Characters Introduced in The Suicide Squad

After waiting for a while, the first season of this series was finally completed on Thursday. And I had the chance to watch the whole season yesterday on HBO Go. All right, why don't I just get right to it.

Brief Story Line

After the events in The Suicide Squad, Chris Smith aka Peacemaker (John Cena - Bumblebee, Vacation Friends etc) who just recovered from his injury, thought he could run free only to find himself recruited again by ARGUS for a special project called Butterfly. The team now was led by Murn (Chukwudi Iwuji) supported by Agent Harcourt (Jennifer Holland - American Pie Presents: The Book of Love etc), the tech guy John Economos (Steve Agee - The Sarah Silverman Program series etc) and the newest member Leota Adebayo (Danielle Brooks - Orange is the New Black TV series etc).

Meanwhile, Chris had personal problem of his own like dealing with his domineering father August Smith (Robert Patrick - The Poison RoseFrom Dusk Till Dawn: The Series etc) and best friend the psychotic Vigilante (Freddie Stroma - Unreal TV series etc). Things also gotten really complicated for the whole team when police detectives Song (Annie Chang) and her partner Fitzgibbon (Lochlyn Munro - Scary Movie etc) were investigating a case involving Peacemaker.

So what would happen to Peacemaker and the rest of the team? Find them all in this fantastic series.

End of Brief Story Line

This is a truly entertaining series. You know how you can judge whether you are going to enjoy a series or not even from the start? Now that was how I felt immediately when I watched the first episode. That early interaction between Peacemaker and the janitor at the hospital Jamil (Rizwan Manji) was hilarious and set up as a wonderful beginning to a fun-filled series. There were many times where I could just laughed out loud looking at the craziness of Peacemaker, his constant bullying on Economos or his bantering with Vigilante (who provided some comical behavior as well). Basically it was the dynamics of the whole team that was really fun to see.

Aside from the dark humor approach, the action sequence were also what made this series awesome. They were well executed with a lot of brutal fight scenes and in every episode there would be some actions. That climax in the 8th episode which served as the season finale, was just super amazing. And please do not keep your eyes off whatever device you are watching this to avoid missing out on a totally surprising scene towards the end. It was wonderful how they managed to pull it of. Oh the special effects were really good too like the ones involving Eagly and other parts.

Talking about the episodes, this series was not having long duration. The longest one was probably only 45 minutes (the first) and few were even less than 40 minutes. Nevertheless it did not make them less enjoyable. Every episode also has a funny post end credit scene. Five of the episodes were directed by James Gunn himself who created & wrote the series. It also felt like the perfect combination of action & humor which I am sure was due to Gunn's experience in directing those Guardians of the Galaxy movies and obviously The Suicide Squad. The cast were all perfect for their roles to my opinion. I liked all the characters as they complimented one another. Aside from the cast mentioned above, there were also the appearance of Elizabeth Ludlow as Leota's wife Keeya and Christopher Heyerdahl (Van Helsing TV series etc). Fun fact: Jennifer Holland and Steve Agee played together in Brightburn which happened to be directed by James Gunn.

Overall, this is definitely one of the DC series that I really liked with its story, action, comedy and pleasing surprises. It was very entertaining and supported by cast who looked like they were really enjoying themselves and having great dynamics. John Cena was definitely the star who had shown his capability of playing in action and comedic roles. He even showed his other talent as well in one of the episodes. And James Gunn really has to be applauded for his creativity in bringing out this relatively unknown DC character into the center stage. No wonder the series was critically acclaimed and loved by audience. So if you are looking for an interesting DC superhero/antihero series with the attributes I mentioned, then you would definitely enjoy this. I am definitely looking forward to the second season to see what craziness would be in store for Peacemaker and friends.
