This was a movie that did not garner a lot of attention in Indonesian theaters (at least not to me). I never saw its trailer shown before and I only know very little of the movie from its very brief synopsis. As it premiered yesterday while I was on special screening with my wife for another upcoming movie, I only got the chance to see it today. OK let us move on with the film now.
Brief Story Line
A married couple of Tori (Elizabeth Banks - The Lego Movie 2 & its prequel etc) and Kyle Breyer (David Denman - 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi etc) were having difficulties to have kids. But one night they got a miracle in the form of a baby boy whom they found in the woods. Years later, the boy who was named Brandon (Jackson A. Dunn) had grown into a healthy, very intelligent kid.
However after his 12th birthday, Brandon started to show something dark in him. It brought danger to his family and friends as well.
So what would happen to the Breyer family and Brandon? Find them all in this intriguing and smart horror mystery movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well for a movie that we knew nothing about and not based on any comic books, this was actually pretty entertaining. To my surprise I kind of enjoyed this and my wife was able to go through the entire film without having too much time avoiding seeing horrible scenes. This was due to the fact that the horror was not the supernatural (ghostly) kind and therefore both of us felt the scary parts were mostly because of jump scare scenes. It was not the eerie or bone chilling frightening type of horror movie.
From the early part, we could already guessed where the movie was heading and even if the pace was not the rushing type it did not feel very slow. Strangely though when we thought the movie was nearing its final moments, I realized that we just went through 1 hour duration and still got around half hour or so to complete, which was surprising as we felt the story was already developed quite far.
This movie had its share of cool visual effects. Not the most spectacular kind but adequately done. The most entertaining part to me was definitely the sound effects. We enjoyed it even in a Dolby Surround 7.1 system which already gave us quite the scare every time during those jump scare scenes. The movie also had a very nice climax (even if we could predict some of them). The ending was very cool, quite the typical horror movie. There were brief scenes during the early part of the end credit scene which had the appearance of Michael Rooker. But other than those, there was no mid or post end credit scene.
The factor which made me felt this one was interesting was because of some similarities with a famous superhero movie from DC comics. It was toying with the idea of what would happen when instead of becoming a superhero, this person became the total opposite. Instead of saving the people and the world, he brought disaster and danger to everyone. I guess that was the reason why it was also categorized under superhero genre. This was what made me in awe with how creative these Hollywood people in making stories. From what I understand, this film was produced by Kenneth Huang and James Gunn (the man who directed Guardians of the Galaxy movies).
Overall this was a movie that might surprise you. A quite unique kind of horror movie where the horror was the result of the evil in a person whom we would never picture. Something that might make you think differently towards the superhero we love all this time. It was pretty enjoyable to me and my wife. But if you are looking for the classic ghost story or possession movies to scare your life, then this did not qualify as that. However, if you want to look for something different in a horror movie, then you could give this a try. It is currently playing in all cinema chains in Indonesia and we should feel fortunate as it would only be shown in US cinemas in 2 weeks time.
Happy watching!
