Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Maximum Gore Entertainment

I forgotten about this movie that was scheduled to be released on Netflix yesterday. Luckily I was checking on what new films available last night and noticed this. So without any hesitation, I watched this one immediately. OK, lets get the show on the road.

Brief Story Line

A group of young people that consisted of Melody (Sarah Yarkin - Happy Death Day 2U etc), her younger sister Lila (Elsie Fisher - The Addams Family 2019 version etc), her business partner Dante (Jacob Latimore - The Chi TV series etc) and his girlfriend Ruth (Nell Hudson) went to the ghost town of Harlow to start some business. They have assigned local mechanic named Richter (Moe Dunford - Vikings TV series) to help them with some work as they prepared to meet with the investor Catherine (Jessica Allain).

However things gotten out of hand when somehow Leatherface (Mark Burnham) reappeared in Harlow and start his massacre again.

So how would the story conclude? You can find it out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I was interested in watching this movie as I have seen more than one of the many Texas Chainsaw Massacre film (the ones released in 21st century) and I kind of enjoyed the intensity. So even though most of the cast here are practically unfamiliar to me, I was still looking forward to see how Leatherface would terrorize again. This film was set up as a direct sequel of the 1974 first movie The Texas Chain Saw Massacre while disregarding whatever happened with the other sequels/remake/prequels inbetween.

It did not take too long for Leatherface to show up in this film. I was already expecting some gore scenes here but it still gave me a bit of a shock with the first killing. And from that moment on, it was just crazy and ridiculously sadistic seeing how brutal and violent the killing spree were shown. This movie is really not for the faint of heart but I am sure fans of gorefest would be enjoying it a lot. No wonder it was rated R for the heavy violence.

Like in the pattern of new movies based on Intellectual Property from the past, the movie makers tried to bring the story to the modern world. There was one scene which was a bit absurd but sadly quite spot on in the current condition where updating social media is like a must for a lot of people. But what surprised me here was the lack of screaming by a character which seemed a little bit weird, especially when seeing the bloody victim (although it could be argued due to the shock).

The special effects were pretty good and the film would never be seen as lacking the amount of blood or extreme violence (sometimes even horrifying). The main cast were pretty standard and nothing extraordinary. Mark Burnham's casting as the new Leatherface was perfect for me with his stature and intimidating presence. There was also the appearance of Olwen Fouéré as Sally Hardesty, the only survivor from 1974 attack from the first film. Burnham and Fouéré replaced the original cast Gunnar Hansen and Marilyn Burns who passed away in 2015 and 2014 respectively.

The movie has a short duration of only 83 minutes which was sufficient to show the savage killings. Any longer than that, perhaps would be too tiring as well. Oh there was a post end credit scene in the film in case you are wondering. From what I understand, there was supposed to be more movies of this franchise, but whether or not it's going to happen is another case. The critics were unkind toward this movie (no surprise there), while audience did not seem to truly embrace it either. So if you are in the mood for some good old fashion slasher film having tons of bloody violent scenes throughout, then you might enjoy it. But if you are looking for an intelligent horror movie, then this one would not satisfy you. For me this one is mildly entertaining and I would always remember it as just a truly bloody & violent slasher horror movie but nothing more.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3 out of 5 stars
