Ready or Not - A Brilliantly Done Movie of a Simple Premise

This is the next movie that I saw after my long holiday. It was released since 28 August 2019 in Indonesia and we were supposed to see it on that night, but it did not play in the theater nearest to our home. It was a good thing that it was still playing, as there was another movie premiered two days later but no longer playing now, so we had the chance to see the film last night. Anyway, I'll just get on with it.

Brief Story Line

Grace (Samara Weaving - SMILF TV series etc) had just gotten married with Alex LeDomas (Mark O'Brien - Republic of Doyle TV series etc) who was from a really wealthy family. As part of their family tradition, Grace had to play a game before officially becoming part of LeDomas. As so happened, the game they were required to play was Hide and Seek. However, it would appear that the game was not a normal kind, since Grace had to hid and not be found or caught before dawn, otherwise she would have to die.

This would be the start of all the craziness during the game, since Grace had to escape from being captured by Alex family which included his parents Tony (Henry Czerny - The Exorcism of Emily Rose, Revenge TV series etc) and Becky (Andie MacDowell - Sex, Lies and Videotape, Four Weddings and a Funeral etc), his siblings Daniel (Adam Brody - Cop Out, StartUp TV series etc) and Emilie (Melanie Scrofano - Wynona Earp TV series etc) with their spouses & even Auntie Helene (Nicky Guadagni).

So what would happen to Grace and Alex? Find them all in this fun thrilling movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I saw the trailer to this film few times earlier, I was pretty intrigued by the premise. Once again, as my wife and I had noticed, the creativity of Hollywood people never ceased to amazed us. This was another example of how a simple story could be made into a brilliant movie. And it did not require too big of budget either. OK so the film's commercial success might not be that spectacular but it still gave the producers some profit.

Anyway, we really enjoyed this film. It was a combination of some intensity plus some comedic moments here and there, which is why the movie was categorized as black comedy horror due to its dark humor. We both chuckled few times because of some scenes that the film maker intelligently put in the right places.

The film would not have been enjoyable had it not for the performances of the cast, in particular the main lead Samara Weaving. Her portrayal of this happy bride entering into the family of her beloved husband which turned out to be a complete opposite of what she had imagined was amazing. Especially with her characterization when she faced danger and her fun remarks as well. The rest of the cast were also quite impressive with my favorite the father Tony with his panic behavior and also the sister Emilie.

The movie was supposed to have duration of around 95 minutes but due to some violence which was cut by Indonesian censorship body, it was reduced to 94 minutes in Indonesia. There was no mid or post end credit scene, except for one very brief thing at the very end which was just for fun. The sound effects were pretty decent especially during few jump scares scenes. And since the story was told during the night, we have to get use to the dark during most of the film. So better avoid seeing this in theater with lesser brightness in their projectors. I also loved the setting of the house which was perfect for the kind of game they were playing. But most of it all, I truly loved the ending. I am sure that the audience really appreciated it as well with few people clapping their hands in the studio.

Overall this was an entertaining movie. If you have not seen this, give it a try if you are interested with the kind of movie that provided you some intensity & thrill combined with some dark humor and if you do not mind with some of the violence. This is certainly not for kids with the kind of language used.

Happy watching!
