Time Renegades - also known as Siganitalja

As I was engaged to go to KL for a meeting, I took the Garuda flight in the morning and was very lucky to find tons of inflight entertainment available to choose. I was a little bit confused on which movie to watch during my 2 hours 5 minutes flight, so I decided to watch a movie that was shorter than that the flight schedule and still interesting. Hence this movie was chosen as it fit into the 2 criteria above as the movie was happening in 2 different timelines but somehow connected. I also chose this as I remembered wanting to watch the movie when it played in Indonesian theater few months ago, but was not able to see it due to some reasons. Anyway, let's get on with the movie.

Brief Story Line

While trying to capture a criminal on new year's eve of 2014, Gun-woo (Lee Jin-wook - Glass Castle & Nine: Nine Time Travels TV series) got shot and had to be hospitalized for some time. After this incident, he started to have a dream and can see through another person's eyes in 1983. He was able to see through Ji-hwan (Jo Jung-Suk - The Face Reader, My Love, My Bride etc) a music teacher working in a high school. 

It was shown that Ji-hwan was getting ready to get married with his girl friend, a physics teacher named Yoon-jung (Lim Su-jeong - A Tale of Two Sisters, All About My Wife etc). They had a very good relationship with the students also, particularly 1 bad boy student named Kang Seung-beom (Lee Min-ho - Running Man) who Ji-hwan wanted to give a chance to make him a better student.

When Ji-hwan was sleeping, he was always having dreams of seeing through the eyes of Gun-woo. So both of them apparently were sharing dreams but in different time line. Ji-hwan shared his dreams to Yoon-jung and his students about the conditions in 2015. Story got complicated when Gun-woo was given the documents of unresolved old cases by his new captain chief Kang (Jung Jin-young - Hi! Dharma!, King and the Clown etc). In there it showed murder cases happening in 1983 in the school where Ji-hwan and Yoon-jung taught.

Gun-woo started to realize that things he saw back in 1983 through his dreams were actual events and there were danger lurking in that school. He also somehow able to found a girl who looked exactly like Yoon-jung in 2015. He finally got to know her as So-Eun who was working as a high school teacher as well. And he also started to fall in love with her.

As Ji-hwan was able to see Gun-woo's cases files, he started his own investigation and tried to stop the murders from happening. Meanwhile Gun-woo was also able to see that the future changed whenever there was change of event in 1983.

So can Ji-hwan change the events that would definitely ruined his life based on the information & investigations done by Gun-woo in 2015? Can Gun-woo helped Ji-hwan change his pasts as well? What would all the events unfold to later? Find them all in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

This movie had so much potential. The premise was cool and it kind of reminded me of another Hollywood movie titled Frequency with Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel playing. Unfortunately, since I saw that one and considered it as one of my favorite science fiction thriller movie, I could not help but to compare this movie with that. And I had to say that despite the similar 2 timelines stories where anything done in 1 timeline would change the other timeline's events, this movie has got a very disturbing plot hole. And this plot hole was bugging me a lot even till the end as it did not give closure to that plot hole. It's not about the logic of a movie (as we should know already that movies always defy logic), but this plot hole is something that I think should be addressed immediately when Gun-woo realized about the presence of So-Eun.

However, if you disregard this plot hole, you can still enjoy the suspense of the crimes being stopped from happening and of course the romance between Gun-woo with So-Eun in 2015 and Ji-hwan with Yoon-jung in 1983. It was also nice to see the romantic ending which I think is why the movie is categorized as romantic thriller film instead of science fiction thriller film.

If you happen to go flying with Garuda this month, maybe you can opt to see this movie and enjoy it. But only if you like this kind of movie and if you do not mind this plot hole.
