Enola Holmes 3 - Not as Impressive as Its Predecessors with Less Complex Mystery, Though Still Maintained Its Charm

In the past few weeks, this movie was already shown as part of the Coming Soon section on Netflix. It was sequel to the film that I liked previously so it's no brainer that I would immediately watch it as soon as it was made available yesterday. OK then, let's get right to it.

Brief Story Line

After years of being in relationship with Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge - Disclaimer mini series etc), Enola Holmes (Millie Bobby Brown - DamselGodzilla Vs. Kong etc) agreed to his marriage proposal and planned to have their wedding in Malta as suggested by Lady Tewkesbury (Hattie Morahan - Fool Me Once mini series, The Golden Compass etc). From Enola's side though, only her brother Sherlock (Henry Cavill - In the GreyThe Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare etc) was able to attend since their mother Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter - Agatha Christie's Seven Dials mini series, Lady Jane etc) was being hunted by British government for her past crimes.

Unfortunately though, Sherlock was somehow missing before the wedding and Enola decided to look for him with the help from Dr. Watson (Himesh Patel - Don't Look Up, Station Eleven TV series etc). As she investigated his disappearance, Enola found that it involved very dangerous people and a much bigger issue.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I said above that I liked the previous Enola Holmes movies which was due to the interesting characters and also the intriguing though not so complex mysteries. In this third film, the fun part of breaking the fourth wall was still there and Enola still had the same wit plus her deducing capabilities looked to be increased further up to the level of Sherlock. However compared to the second movie, somehow I felt that the mystery was less complex and Sherlock was given less screen time again. In addition, there was no major plot twists and everything seemed quite predictable.

Besides its rather simplistic mystery, I also felt this one focused more on the romance & drama aspect which should not be surprising considering the movie poster itself already have large portion of Enola and Tewkesbury. It's not a bad thing in a movie, but it did make the overall feel like a romance comedy drama with just a touch of mystery. Plus the duration was also quite short with 108 minutes including very long closing credits (both previous movies were more than 2 hours). Btw there was no mid or post end credit scene.

In addition to the cast above, there was the reappearance of Sharon Duncan-Brewster (BallerinaDune 2021 etc) as Moriarty and support cast like Jason Watkins (McDonald and Dodds TV series etc) as Brigadier General Sampson, Joe Azzopardi as Mizzi and several others in minor role, including Susan Wokoma (Cheaters TV series etc) cameo as Edith. This time the movie was directed by Philip Barantini who took over from Harry Bradbeer. Barantini is famous for directing that critically acclaimed mini series Adolescence. However it is still written by Jack Thorne (The Aeronauts, Radioactive etc) who wrote the previous 2 films.

It seems that critics were not as impressed with this latest one compared to its predecessors, although it is still very early and the score might change as more reviews came in. Not sure about its performance on Netflix yet as it was just released yesterday, but since Millie Bobby Brown has got a lot of fans, likely the movie would still become a hit. Looking at the ending, it could be considered as a closed chapter of Enola which is quite common if you want to complete a trilogy. Personally though, I hope there will be at least another one with really complex mystery and provide a more fulfilling ending. So if you are one of Millie's fans and love to see her portraying the witty and intelligent Enola Holmes, then I think you would still very much enjoy this movie. However if you are hoping for a great conclusion, then probably you would not be too satisfied.
