Brief Story Line
After the events of previous movie, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise - The Firm, The Mummy etc) was working together with Benji (Simon Pegg - The Boys TV series, Ready Player One etc) and Luther (Ving Rhames - The Wild Robot, Pulp Fiction etc) who created a malware that in theory could capture the AI referred to as the Entity. However Gabriel (Esai Morales - NYPD Blue TV series, Crescent City etc) who needed the cruciform key hold by Ethan tried to disrupt this plan. With the help from Grace (Hayley Atwell - Peter Rabbit 2, Captain America: The First Avenger etc), former Gabriel's assassin Paris (Pom Klementieff - Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, The Killer's Game etc) and later former CIA agent Degas (Greg Tarzan Davis - Grey's Anatomy TV series etc), they must device an impossible mission to save the world.
Things got complicated with the US president Erika Sloane (Angela Bassett - Zero Day mini series, Bumblebee etc) and her Chief of Staffs who wanted to contain and make use of the Entity. With time running out before the Entity got control of all the world's nuclear, Ethan must finish his mission against all odds.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Ever since I found out that this would be the final film in the series, I was highly anticipating it and wanted to see the movie when it was having its early release previous weekend. Sadly all the show times were late night and my wife and I were not in the mood to spend almost 3 hours in the studio trying to avoid sleeping. So we had to wait till the weekend where we could see it in the afternoon. And it was totally worth it cause we were able to see the movie without feeling sleepy and could fully concentrate, which is a must to better understand and appreciate it.
The movie started off pretty strongly with some intense and dramatic moment. Although subsequently it focused a lot on the Entity discussion, but it did not take long before the story became more exciting. There were plenty of actions throughout the film that were suspenseful which was to properly build up the grand finale. With so much at stake and story to be told, I could understand the reason for having such long duration as it need to cover many things (total was 169 minutes including closing credits but no mid or post end credit scenes).
Aside from the multiple crazy stunts that culminated to one of its most ambitious and awesome action sequence of the series, the movie also showed glimpses of past films which I thought was a nice touch as we could reminiscent a bit and could see several past characters here. In addition to the names I mentioned above, the movie also had large ensemble support cast such as Henry Czerny (Scream VI, Revenge TV series etc) as Kittridge, Holt McCallany (The Amateur, The Ice Road etc) as Secretary of Defense, Hannah Waddingham (Lilo & Stitch live version, The Fall Guy etc) as Rear Admiral Neely, Tramell Tillman (Severance TV series etc) as Captain Jack Bledsoe, Rolf Saxon (narrator of Teletubbies children series etc) reprising his role as CIA Analyst William Donloe and many more. Btw the director of this movie was Christopher McQuarrie who did great job directing the last 3 M:I films. I read that it was well received by critics and audience which would translate well for the studio cause its production budget was so big due to various delays (said to be between USD 300-400 million!).
As far as entertainment goes, this was definitely a great one and better to be seen and experienced in the large screen with great sound effects (our studio's Dolby Atmos system really satisfied me). The action and wonderful stunts were the main attraction of the movie which would please fans of the franchise. There were few lighter moments here and there but in general the film was having more suspense, so much so that a couple of times we were left breathless by the intensity. So if you are looking for an action movie with Tom Cruise still able to deliver audacious stunts despite his age without using CGI, then you certainly do not want to miss it in the cinema cause watching it on TV would not provide the optimum experience. If there is anything that I thought could have made the movie gave greater impact was if it had a bit different ending. But that's just my opinion. Overall my wife and I totally enjoyed ourselves and would recommend you see it by yourself preferably before you found out the spoiler. Happy watching!
