Brief Story LIne
Hub Halloran (Kevin Bacon - Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special etc) was a bounty hunter who got into an altercation with one of his targets and got killed. However, he was later resurrected by the devil and "recruited" to work for him to catch demons that escaped from hell. Hub's mother Kitty (Beth Grant - The Mindy Project TV series, Speed etc) was shocked when she found out but decided to assist him in his missions.
Despite his confusions and just brief explanation from his "coordinator" Midge (Jolene Purdy - Under the Dome TV series etc), Hub still managed to do his assignments. He also got the chance to try amending his relationship with his ex-wife Maryanne (Singer Jennifer Nettles) and their teenaged son Cade (Maxwell Jenkins - Lost in Space TV series etc). Although it was very difficult since Maryanne's new boyfriend Lucky Callahan (Damon Herriman - Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway, Mr. Inbetween TV series etc), a former criminal, was always in the way. Things got further complicated as it turned out there was a reason for demons kept on escaping.
So what would happen to Hub and his new life as bounty hunter for hell? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
I am glad that I gave the chance to watch this series cause it was entertaining as expected. Even from the first episode, we were already shown Hub's problem while trying to understand why he suffered such condition. The first three episodes were actully enjoyable but I did have a feeling that the story became a bit repetitive. It's a good thing that the episode had a shocking ending which made me curious. Although the cases did seem similar, but after a while, there was another development that enhanced the complexity.
The series did not only focus on Hub's new job but also on him reconneting with ex-wife and son. It was also nice to see Hub and Kitty's mother-son relationship. However sometimes I did feel that those personal matter (and the many singings) were a bit too much, although it could be understood since Maryanne and Hub were written as singers. Which I believed was the reason to cast Nettles, Bacon and Jenkins who have singing background. I also liked Damon Herriman's characterization as the annoying Lucky. Aside from those main cast, there were recurring characters like Sheriff Ruby (Denitra Isler - The Resident TV series etc), Lucky's informant Tater (Mike Kaye), Cheryl Dawson (Katherine Barnes - Average Joe TV series etc) and few others.
Watching this series also gave me some strong vibe of one of my favorite horror fantasy TV series about the Winchester brothers catching demons in "Supernatural", except the demons (at least the ones shown in this season) did not seem familiar to me. During closing credits, I did not see that the series was based on anything. It was created by Grainger David who did not seem to have any notable prior works yet. But I did see Kevin Bacon as one of executive producer along with well known name in the horror industry, Jason Blum of Blumhouse Production who had produced so many successful horror films.
The action here was pretty good with nicely done special effects and some were even pretty violent during the killing of and by those demons. The series itself only had 8 episodes with an ending that certainly screamed for a second season. But till the time I wrote this post, I have not heard any news about its renewal. I also liked the 6th episode and finale the most which seemed to be similar to general audience views and critics looked to be pleased enough with the series as well.
Overall this was enjoyable for me as it had interesting story of undead bounty hunter trying to catch demons. Though it might have few similarities with another favorite, but its not exactly clean (even selfish) lead character was intriguing to see. I also like the fact they did not make the cases to be straight forward closed and outside parties like law enforcement were involved which make it more realistic. The only thing that I had little problem with (not because it made the series bad, but more of personal preference) was the many singing scenes. My wife who only heard glimpses of the scenes even thought I was watching something musical. Anyway if you are looking for fun horror action with brief humor and pretty well done demon killing scenes would likely enjoy this one. I just hope it would be renewed so we can have proper conclusions.
