(TV SERIES) Lost in Space Season 1 - An Amazing Sci-fi Adventure Series from Netflix

I remember reading somewhere about this series with a familiar title. It was actually a remake of the then quite famous series back in the 60s and was made into a movie in 1998 starring Matt LeBlanc. As I am a fan of science fiction series, I was not going to miss out on this, especially since it was a Netflix original series which usually translated to good show. OK, well let us get on with more details now.

Brief Story Line

The Robinson family that consisted of a former US Navy Seal John (Toby Stephens - Hunter Killer, Die Another Day etc), his wife the aerospace engineer Maureen (Molly Parker - Deadwood TV series, House of Card TV series etc) and their 3 children: Judy the prodigal 18 years old doctor (Taylor Russel - Escape Room etc), the teenager Penny (Mina Sundwal) and the youngest & intelligent Will (Maxwell Jenkins) were part of a large team on a mission for outer space colonization, due to earth's condition which would make it uninhabitable in the near future.

The mission was done via a large mother ship called Resolute which had smaller teams in the space ships called Jupiter. Due to an incident, some of the Jupiters and their crews were thrown off course and landed on a nearby planet. One of those was a mechanic named Don West (Ignacio Serricchio - The Mule, General Hospital TV series etc) who seemed to be interested only in making side income. There was also a psychopath woman who posed as Dr. Smith (Parker Posey - Superman Returns, CafĂ© Society etc). All of them and other crews who fell on the planet had to find ways to survive as well as try to return to Resolute.

So what would happen to the Robinsons? Find them all in this interesting and one of the most entertaining sci-fi series that I had watched.

End of Brief Story Line

After watching the pilot episode which had a duration of a little over 1 hour, I was immediately hooked with this series. It had a wonderful opening which had all the necessary ingredients of a great series for me. It was suspenseful, intense and intriguing at the same time. The introduction to the Robinsons was done in such a smooth way that even from the start, we could already knew their distinctive characters.

As the series progressed, we would be given some slight background story on the Robinsons family conditions prior to their journey, which were shown using flashbacks. These scenes would make us understand better on the reasons for the trip and their relationships. In addition, there were also a bit of side story relating to Dr. Smith's background. To be honest, her character was really greatly portrayed by Parker Posey as she really made me mad with her self preservation thought and her psychopathic nature.

If we talked about the characters, all the main lead actors & actresses played their roles quite perfectly. Of all the children, I liked Penny's character the most as she would provide some funny remarks in an unpredictable time and situation which made me smile and sometimes chuckled. She was the perfect representation of a middle child. I also liked Will who was such a sweet kid with a bit of doubt on his own intelligence. And his relationship with the Robot (yes there was a robot in here which you could see in the poster too), was kind of beautiful. It also reminded me a bit of the relationship in the movie Real Steel which I really loved. Oh, Don West character was also fun to see.

A sci-fi series would not have been entertaining without a good special effects. And this one was surprisingly amazing for a TV series. Yes there might be one or two scenes that were quite obvious as CGI, but the rest were pretty awesome. The robot effects, the outer space scenery, the spaceships and many more were pretty realistic. It seemed that the visual effects were pretty extraordinary as the series received multiple nominations (and awards) in the 2019 Visual Effects Society Awards. I mentioned above that this series was a remake of the 1960s series. I had never watched that one and thus could not compare it with this one. But all I can say is the 2018 remake should make the series creator (Irwin Allen) proud.

Overall this was an amazing series to my opinion. It was filled with many elements of a good sci-fi adventure series, with many unknown features in a different planet, plus greatly done special effects to make them realistic. In addition to those qualities, the story and the wonderful characters also made this series became a lot more interesting. There were even some emotional stuff and funny moments as well to make the series more colorful. I was really intrigued with the series from the start and managed to complete watching all 10 episodes during one whole weekend. The season finale was one of my favorite (among other episodes like the pilot and episodes 4 & 5). Its ending certainly made me craved for second season which should be premiering this year, though I am not clear in which month. Anyway, if you are fans of sci-fi adventure genre, then this one should be to your liking. Even for non sci-fi fans, this one should be entertaining with the wonderful characters.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

PS: Lost in Space was a reimagining of the famous 1812 novel titled The Swiss Family Robinson about the Robinson family who were shipwrecked. It was written by Johann David Wyss
