Brief Story Line
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jakson - Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard, Incredibles 2 etc) with his team that also included Captain Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris - They Cloned Tyrone etc) who were onboard SABER station, experienced an energy disturbance later revealed to be a jump point anomaly. Nick asked the help from Carol Denvers aka Captain Marvel (Brie Larson - Fast X, Trainwreck etc) to investigate the occurence as it was near her location. She found out that it was due to the action by Krees new supreme leader Dar-Benn (Zawe Ashton - Fresh Meat TV series etc) which threaten the peace talks with the Skrulls and potentially lead to war.
Meanwhile Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel (Iman Velani) was just having her regular activities at home with her parents Yusuf (Mohan Kapur - The Vaccine War etc) and Muneeba (Zenobia Shroff - 7 Days etc) & older brother Aamir (Saagar Shaikh) when she was unexpectedly caught up in this. Things further got complicated with the result of the time jump that affected the powers of Carol, Monica and Kamala.
So how would the story conclude? You could find them all in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
OK I got to be honest that I was not a major fan of Captain Marvel even though she was extremely powerful and had great contribution during Avengers: End Game. So I saw this movie without having any major expectation, but it turned out to be better than I anticipated. My wife and I found ourselves to be enjoying the film a lot as we felt it to be funny and refreshing plenty of time, with the favorite character Kamala Khan who was very youthful and convincing as a teenager meeting with her idol. Even my wife immediately decided to watch Ms. Marvel mini series.
Aside from the nice chemistry between the three lead characters, the movie was also entertaining during the fun scenes showing how their powers interconnected. I thought it was amazingly done by the director Nia DaCosta (Candyman 2021 version etc). However, I thought the conflict between Krees and Skrulls was a bit under developed which probably was due to her insistence of wanting to make the movie under 2 hours. Yes, this one was actually short to Marvel's standard with only 105 minutes that already included long closing credits. Btw, there was a very interesting mid end credit scene that would excite fans of comic books and no post end credit scene (just something a bit funny in case you want to wait till the very end).
The cast mostly did great job in here particularly Iman Velani and the rest of Khan family, though the villain was a bit so so. In addition to the names above, there were also the appearance of Gary Lewis (My Son etc) as the emperor of Skrulls and South Korean actor Park Seo-joon (Concrete Utopia, Midnight Runners etc) as Prince Yan. But I think he was under utilized and my personal feeling he was cast just to add more representation or to gain more audience due to his large fanbase. He had only brief screen time which was pale in comparison with his fellow actor Don Lee in Eternals. It's possibly because of the short duration that there was not enough time.
The action sequence here was OK with my favorites during the fights involving the three of them in the early part, the battle in the middle but the finale to me was not spectacular enough. In fact I thought it was a bit weird with Captain Marvel's grand power that she was not able to finish the fight sooner. However, it was still fun to see the coordination by the three of them. The sound effects also greatly increased the excitement while seeing the movie. Oh, and I also like the scene before the end which confirmed my thoughts on the future of some of the Marvel comics characters.
Overall to me this was actually a pretty entertaining movie. The characters were likable and the way they fought and their interaction was a joy to watch. The story might not be strong point with the Kree and Skrulls too obvious as backdrop and did not have strong significance, or the Planet Aladna and its people that did not get proper chance to develop. Critics were divided and the audience sadly did not too embrace it either, probably due to people feeling bored with superheroes? Even in Indonesia the studios were not fully booked like they used to. For me and my wife though, regardless of what people might say, we really like the film due to its freshness and pleasant feeling after seeing it. So if you want to give this a chance, I think better to watch Wandavision and Ms. Marvel for better appreciation.
