Brief Story Line
Army ranger Jackson Briggs (Channing Tatum - The Lost City, Smallfoot etc) was trying to get another rotation but was deemed unfit. While asking for favors from his former superiors to give recommendation, he was informed of the death of his former army friend Riley. Briggs was asked to escort Riley's military dog named Lulu to attend to his funeral.
As Briggs was desperate for the recommendation, he decided to go ahead with the "assignment" despite worrying about Lulu's condition who was obviously upset with the loss of her master.

End of Brief Story Line
As I said above, when watching the trailer of the movie, it looked to promise lots of laughter and humor. So when I saw this movie, I could not help but expecting it to be a full comedy movie with many hilarious moments. However, it turned out that it was not really like that. Yes there were some humor a bit here and there, but it was certainly not a full comedy film. In fact I thought it has some drama as well, in particular the bonding between Jackson Briggs and Lulu.
The main attraction of this movie was definitely how Briggs and Lulu developed an unlikely relationship which started very poorly. It was pretty amusing looking at how frustrated Briggs was with Lulu's sometimes annoying behaviour. However, as the story proceed, we could guess that it would not be continuously problematic. In fact, I thought the ending was quite predictable, although in this sort of movie, the journey was always the best part.
For a movie that has a very simple story, this one was quite successful in making audience quite happy. But oddly enough, I thought it was not as touching as I thought it would be. Even my wife who is easily touched did not seem to be as emotional as she used to. Channing Tatum was good as this former army ranger who was so chatty and had some emotional baggage. I could not see the name of the dog playing Lulu, but the trainer had to be applauded for making her looked convincing. In addition to Tatum, there were few other support cast like Jane Adams (Hung TV series etc) as Tamara and former wrestler Kevin Nash as Gus who provided some comical moments and Ethan Suplee (The Hunt etc) as Noah, with few other minor cast.
This movie has a duration of 101 minutes which was pretty long. Perhaps it was due to lot of details being shown. It did not have any mid or post end credit scene. Btw the film was co-directed by Channing Tatum himself with Reid Carolin in their directorial debut (Carolin had been known as producer of Magic Mike movies). The movie was well received by critics and audiences and a commercial success too which is understandable as it has relatively small production budget.
Overall this was an interesting enough comedy drama movie. Those who love to see people bonding with animal through a road trip would definitely enjoy this one. For me and my wife, we quite enjoy it and did have some laughs, even if most of the fun moments have been shown in the trailer. There was one amazing moment involving Lulu and her brother Nuke, plus a bit of nice moment during the funeral. So if you want to see this kind of movie, then you can give it a try. It's currently playing exclusively in one cinema chain.
