Smallfoot - A Funny Entertaining Animated Movie for Family with Unique Perspective & Heavy Moral Message

I have seen the trailer to this film many times in theater for the past few months and I noticed that it had a very unique premise which seemed to promise a lot of funny moments. So my wife and I who also like to see good 3D animated movies, definitely were looking forward to see this. It was a good thing that it premiered on the day where we were quite free. Anyway, I will go straight to the movie now.

Brief Story Line

In the hilltop of Himalaya and hidden by clouds, there was a group of Yeti living peacefully in their village. Migo (Channing Tatum - Kingsman: The Golden Circle, Logan Lucky etc) was a young simple minded Yeti who accidentally met with a human with their small feet (referred by Yeti as small foot). Unfortunately though, no one in the village believed him, especially the Stonekeeper (Rapper Common -  John Wick: Chapter 2, etc) and even Migo's father Gorgle (Danny DeVito - Batman Returns, Twins etc).

However, apparently there were group of Yeti who were believers of smallfoot existence. They were led by Stonekeeper's daughter Meechee (Zendaya - The Greatest Showman, Shake It Up TV series etc) and included the huge yeti Gwangi (Basketball player LeBron James), a female yeti Kolka (Gina Rodriguez - Deepwater Horizon, Ferdinand etc) and the talkative Fleem (Ely Henry). All of them tried to help Migo proving the villagers wrong.

Meanwhile in the city below the mountains, a wildlife documentary host named Percy (James Corden - Peter Rabbit, Ocean's 8 etc) was trying to increase his rating by manipulating some fiction about yeti, despite the disapproval from his assistant Brenda (Yara Shahidi - Black-ish TV series etc). As fate would have it, Migo and Percy would end up meet with each other and created a lot of surprising moments. So what would happen after these two met? Find them all in this quite fun comedy animated movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well, as I had hoped for, this movie was quite funny just like the trailer suggested. There were quite a lot of funny and amusing moments, especially during the time of the encounter between Migo and Percy, plus some other scenes of the Yeti (personal favorite of course was Fleem who always gave funny remarks). Although there were other movies where the lead were monsters such as Monsters, Inc. but I personally thought this one was funny in an ironic way due to their fear of the small foot of humans.

I thought the first half of the movie was moving in quite a fast pace, very light and filled with scenes that would make us laugh (although some of the scenes had been shown in the trailer which I realized had given us too much scenes that would be better seen in the theater first time). However, once we reached the final third, especially after the scene involving Stonekeeper and Migo, I thought the movie turned into something a lot more serious. I suddenly realize that behind all those funny moments, there was a deep moral message that the movie tried to convey to us. Ultimately it remained to be seen how audience would react to such heavy message.

For me the main attraction of this film was not only the unique premise and the funny moments, but also the wonderful animation. Those animators certainly did a great job to make this movie with a modest budget of around USD 80 million that was at par with other 3D animated movies such as Despicable Me 3 or The Lego Batman Movie (coincidentally produced by Warner Animation Group that also produced this movie). What surprised me was the film did not seem to get the same excitement from the audience as it did not have promising box office performance till the time I wrote this. So sadly enough, this may not be a big hit and there might not be any sequels to the movie.

My wife and I were also entertained by several songs in the movie with our favorite the opening song titled Perfection (sung by Channing Tatum himself) and Percy's Pressure (sung by James Cordon) which obviously using the music from the song Under Pressure (Queen & David Bowie). And since the theater had a good sound system, we could enjoy the nice sound effects & songs a lot better. During the end credit, you could see some funny pictures as if taken from Percy's handphone plus there was one fun brief mid end-credit scene.

Overall this was a fun adventure comedy 3D animated movie with some funny moments, heavy message and scenes that could make the younger audience enjoyed (I could hear a lot of laughter coming from the children who saw this movie last night) and some nice songs for us to enjoy as well. I personally thought it was quite a good family friendly movie and my wife and I were entertained by it (there was even a touching moment towards the end that also affected her). So if you are seeking for this kind of movie which has been lacking in the past few months, then you can certainly see this but if animation movie is not your cup of tea, then better try something else. The choice is yours.
