Underwater - Not the Most Original Science Fiction Horror Movie but Still Thrilling and Super Intense

As the first major Hollywood movie released in Indonesia in 2020, it was no surprise that my wife and I would definitely see this on its premier date. It was not playing in my favorite Dolby Atmos theater but I could not find any information from the website whether it would be released with such effect, so we went ahead to buy tickets for the 7 PM show in the cinema near our home. OK I'll just get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Norah (Kristen Stewart - Charlie's Angels 2019, Snow White and the Huntsman etc) was part of the crew working in the deep sea as mechanical engineer. When the facility was hit by an earth quake, Norah and other crews that consisted of Rodrigo (Mamoudou Athie), the fun guy Paul (T. J. Miller - Deadpool 2Ready Player One etc), the captain (Vincent Cassel - Jason Bourne etc), Liam Smith (John Gallagher Jr - Peppermint etc) and the apprentice Emily (Jessica Henwick - Iron Fist series etc) must find ways to save themselves.

However, their effort would be very dangerous as they had to walk out through the darkness in the deep water with unknown creatures lurking in the shadows.

So what would happen to this crew? Find them all in this suspenseful & thrilling science fiction horror movie.

End of Brief Story Line

When I saw the trailer to this film, I could already picture this as an entertaining and suspenseful movie with lots of jump scare scenes. And after seeing this movie, it was exactly what I had expected. To my surprise the movie did not take long to jump into the thrilling part. And from that moment on, it was super intense till almost the end. My wife said it best that for a movie with duration of only 95 minutes, it was one of the longest 95 minutes she ever felt as we were constantly being caught in the suspense and intensity throughout the movie.

Now the intensity was kept quite constantly almost the entire movie, with a little bit of slowing down towards the end but to me it was great to feel such suspense for that long. The reason for such intense feeling was because the condition the crews were in, which was in the deep sea and the darkness where we would be worried if and when there would be creatures coming out of the shadow and surprise us. The jump scares scenes certainly did not disappoint us. And the movie was suspenseful enough to make the audience fully absorbed as could be seen by the very few people looking at their mobile phones during the show.

The special effects and sound effects were certainly the major factor in making this movie giving the desired effects. Even with just the standard sound system, my wife and I felt it was not inferior to the more sophisticated studio with better sound quality. The music was pretty standard and not the outstanding type (my wife even felt that it was too loud and distracting during the ending scene). Btw, there was no mid or post end credit scenes as all.

The film itself only have 6 people starring in it, with the main lead Kristen Stewart. Mostly they performed their roles adequately, with T. J. Miller his usual self providing the light and humorous remarks and Vincent Cassel who was quite convincing as the captain. The story though was not complicated at all. In fact I felt a lot of similarities with that popular movie Alien and its sequels starring Sigourney Weaver (except that one in space while this one in deep sea but both having female lead). So originality was definitely not the movie's strength but the suspense, thrill and intensity were certainly the highlights. However I could not help feel that in terms of emotion, this movie felt a bit lacking, probably because the characters were not given lot of time to be introduced which made us did not feel the attachment with them.

Overall this was a movie that would satisfy audience looking for some thrill through 90 minutes plus. It was probably similar to a roller coaster ride where you would feel the rush during the ride, but after finishing and the adrenaline stopped pumping, then the thrill was gone. For me and my wife, we were thrilled by the movie and I personally quite enjoyed it. So if you are looking for super intense moments without worrying about the plot and just want to have some good time, then this would suit your needs. However, if you prefer character driven movie and want to feel the emotions plus you do not like seeing something not so original, then this would not be to your liking. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
