Playing with Fire - Enjoyable Only For Those Who could Appreciate Mindless Humor

After watching a heavy Indonesian family drama earlier in the day, my wife and I already had our eyes on this comedy movie to lighten up our mood. It was released on Friday but did not play in the theater near our home, so we ended up seeing it at one of the several studios showing it. Anyway I'll go ahead with the film now.

Brief Story Line

Superintendent Jake Carson (John Cena - BumblebeeBlockers etc) was the leader of smokejumper team in California with his captain Mark (Keegan Michael Key - Toy Story 4The Predator etc) and team members Rodrigo (John Leguizamo - Ice Age: Collission Course & its predecessors) and Axe (Tyler Mane - Halloween etc). During a fire incident, they saved a group of children that consisted of the teenager Brynn (Brianna Hildebrand - Deadpool 2 etc) and her younger brother Will (Christian Convery) & the youngest Zoey (Finley Rose Slater).

As the children were separated from their parents and due to the law, Jake's team had to take care of them until they were picked up. This would be the part where Jake's life and work got turned upside down by those kids. Jake also sought the help from a scientist Dr. Amy Hicks (Amy Greer - The 15:17 to Paris, 27 Dresses etc) to take care of the kids. Things also got complicated for Jake as he was preparing for interview of his dream job by Division Commander Richards (Dennis Haysbert - 24 TV series etc).

So what would happen to Jake and the kids? Find them all in this very light comedy movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well as expected, this movie was very light. It did not take anything too serious at all, and should be seen as that to enjoy it properly. Once you bring logic or take it seriously, you would find this movie to be real trashy and probably would curse the movie makers for creating it. Since my wife and I are OK with the type of humors shown here, we could still enjoy and laugh at some of the scenes, like some audience and especially children. Likely they could laugh since the humorous scenes were kind of slapstick.

The story was quite standard and easily understood with kind of predictable plot and ending. The main attraction for this movie would certainly be the humorous situation the smokejumpers were in when facing 3 kids who were not easy to "handle". The cast did adequate job to make the most of the comedic scenes with John Cena once again showing that he was not just muscle man focusing on action movies. The other members, especially Keegan Michael Key who was given very large portion to show his comedic side, plus John Leguizamo were not bad either. Even the very huge Tyler Mane as Axe also provided some fun moments. The kids were OK with the young Finley Rose Slater as Zoey, the center of all cuteness with her adorable face.

I said above that the comedic moments were mostly slapstick, which would mean that for people who prefer smart comedy and intelligently done humors definitely could not enjoy them. Just as I already guessed, when I read reviews about this movie, it was highly criticized by the critics. There were some humors that might be too gross too for certain people. However, the movie makers did try to give some emotional moments (which did affect my wife) and not just jokes from start to finish. With duration of only around 96 minutes, I thought it was just perfect as it would not be effective if it was too long. Btw there were some fun bloopers during the mid end credit scene but no post end credit scene at all.

Basically this was a movie that would be fun for people who are OK with this kind of jokes. Definitely not recommended for people who could be entertained by different type of humor. It was classified for all ages which I think suit just fine as children could enjoy this easily. So if you are looking for fun and if you consider yourself to be part of audience who could laugh on this type of humor (like me and my wife), then by all means you should give this a try.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
