(Special Screening) 1917 - A Genius and Extraordinary Work from Sam Mendes

After generating rave reviews and multiple nominations plus few already won awards, this movie certainly is on top of my to see list. So when my wife got the invitation to special screening of the film before its official premier date, I was so excited and could not wait for the time to come and see it. Well enough said on that part and let's get on with the film.

Brief Story Line

During the World War I in 1917, two young British soldiers Corporal Will Schofield (George MacKay - Marrowbone, Ophelia etc) and Corporal Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman - Game of Thrones TV series etc) were given special assignment by General Erinmore (Colin Firth - Mary Poppins Returns, Bridget Jones Diary trilogy etc) to send a message to Colonel MacKenzie (Benedict Cumberbatch - The Grinch animated version, Star Trek Into Darkness etc) to cancel an attack on the Germans as it was a trap.

Tom was adamant to complete his assignment urgently to save all 1600 British soldiers which included his older brother Lieutenant Joseph Blake (Richard Madden - Bodyguard TV series, Rocketman etc). During this journey, they would encounter many dangerous situation.

So could they complete this mission? Find it out in this amazing epic war movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I have read many times before about the one-shoot technique that Sam Mendes used in this movie and various comments about how fantastic it was done. To be honest, I had my personal doubts as I thought how could a movie be completely having a one-shoot from start to finish and for a duration of around 2 hours? But once I finished watching it till the very end, I found myself to be in awe of the major achievement the movie makers had done. It was indeed as outstanding as advertised.

From the very beginning when we were introduced with the two lead stars, the camera seemed to have been following them around and never stopped. So you could imagine how attached our feeling towards them and the intensity we had as we followed them facing so many life threatening obstacles. Audience would be overwhelmed as we could sense what they must be facing. And to top it off, the amazing performance particularly from George MacKay with his expressions, worrying, sigh of relief made us felt all the emotions. In this movie, there were also brief appearances from people like Mark Strong (Shazam!, The Imitation Game etc) as Captain Smith and Andrew Scott (Sherlock TV series, Victor Frankenstein etc) as Lieutenant Leslie in addition to those I mentioned above.

For a war movie though, this one was not full of war action sequence. There might be occasional such scenes but the focus was obviously not on those parts as it was more specifically to show the extraordinary journey. This could be a downside for people expecting to see them, but since I already anticipated it, it did not really matter to me.

Aside from that wonderful technique, I also felt that the music in here was amazing, since it added the element of intensity, suspense and it was absolutely wonderful during the emotional scenes. There were plenty of dramatic moments that especially affected my wife. The special effects plus the cool sound effects in the studio where we saw this also satisfied me (though if it was shown in the Starium studio with Dolby Atmos system would make it even more powerful). Btw, we got the chance to see this film in a very large studio at the balcony seats and there were a large group of invitees that included some soldiers of our own.

Ultimately to me, it was an amazing experience to see a movie of such ingenuity. I have the utmost respect to Sam Mendes (previous works included Road to Perdition, Skyfall, Spectre and few others) as the director and Roger Deakins as the cinematographer. Without them, we might not have witnessed such a great film. For almost 2 hours I was mesmerized even if there were times when I felt a bit tired for concentrating too much on looking at the continuity of the single-shot technique.  In case you are wondering, there was no mid or post end credit scene. Overall this was an absolutely wonderful movie that should satisfy movie enthusiasts, as long as they were not looking for a full blown war action film. So if you are fans of the characteristics I stated above, this is truly recommended to be seen once it hits the theaters on 22 January 2020.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
