Reprisal - A Sadly Action Thriller Film that Failed to Deliver

Yesterday, there was new movie premiering exclusively in the biggest cinema chain in Indonesia which starred Bruce Willis. It was not the blockbuster type and in fact it seemed like a B movie. Nevertheless, I still want to give this a try. Again as usual, since I did not have idea on the quality of this movie, I watched this without the company of my wife. So let's get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Jacob (Frank Grillo - Wolf Warrior 2Beyond Skyline etc) was a normal family man with his wife Christina (former Miss Universe 2012 Olivia Culpo) and a young diabetic daughter Sophia (Natlia Sophie Butler). However, he became traumatized when a robbery happened in the bank he worked for and even killed a security guard. As he became obsessed with finding out the robber, he worked together with his neighbor and retired cop James (Bruce Willis - Death Wish, 12 Monkeys etc) to investigate this case.

Meanwhile, the robber who was later on revealed to be Gabriel (Johnathon Schaech - Hercules: the Legend Begins, Marauders etc) was very experienced in doing this kind of robberies. As he planned his next heist, his path would soon cross again with Jacob and also James.

How would the story end for these three people? Find them all in this action thriller movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well just like I predicted, this was a movie that had few plot holes and really undeveloped characters. Being an action thriller movie, it was supposed to give us the thrill & suspense but unfortunately it failed to deliver. The early part was quite intriguing, however it then became a bit of drama with scenes that did not seem to have continuity, plus the character of Bruce Willis which was really not interesting and not convincing as a supposed retired cop. I really feel sorry for him as he did not seem to be able to get great roles like he used to in previous years.

Anyway, as the story progressed, there were some action sequence which were pretty decent with the climax which sadly not really great, despite the heavy shootout scenes. Johnathon Schaech was quite convincing as the bad guy, but his character background was not shared to audience, leaving me feeling confused why he would commit those crimes in the first place (or perhaps I did not notice because I was too bored?). And the rest of the cast were really like invisible and did not leave any impression to me at all.

I am usually open minded when it comes to B movies, but this time however, I was not really entertained by this movie and regrettably, it was not a fun experience. Too bad though, considering the 3 main cast were actually quite good actors. Oh, the movie did have a nice ending involving Frank Grillo's character and it did not have any mid or post end credit scene.

Overall I thought this was not a worthy action thriller movie to be seen in theater. I could certainly understand why the critics savaged this movie and even audiences seemed to be in line with critics' opinions. So if you have more than one option to see a movie in theater, I would recommend you to try the other ones.
