Brief Story Line
Frances Neagley (Maria Sten - Channel Zero: The Dream Door TV series etc) who worked as Private Investigator in Philadelphia got news that her childhood best friend had committed suicide. As she was suspicious of the death, Neagley decided to look into the matter and found that he had been member of a community called Echo Canyon Farm that was similar to a cult led by Lawrence Cole (Damon Herriman - Mortal Kombat II, The Bondsman TV series etc). Neagley sought information from Philadelphia PD where Detective Hudson Riley (Greyston Holt - Lou, Durham County TV series etc) was assigned to help her.
With the help from a resourceful homeless young man named Keno (Jasper Jones - King Ivory etc), Neagley was able to gain more information. Neagley was also assisted by Renee (Adeline Rudolph -Hellboy: The Crooked Man, Chilling Adventures Of Sabrina TV series etc), the administration girl from her office. As they investigate further, it would turn out that Echo Canyon Farm was also backed by pharmaceutical company CEO named Pierce Woodrow (Matthew Del Negro - Crime 101, City on a Hill TV series etc). Things got a lot more dangerous as more people were adamant to stop Neagley from finding out the truth.
So what actually happened in that farm and why did Neagley's friend committed suicide? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
If you are unaware (which I highly doubt), this series was the spin off of the very popular and critically acclaimed Reacher that have been released since 2022 and already had 4 seasons till now. In fact, this series was made available on the same day of its 4th season finale which I believed made fans of Reacher like me to give it a try immediately. Neagley is a character who appeared in that series with very little to no background story except being part of the 110th Special Investigators team. I guess she was intriguing enough for Amazon studio to have her own story which I think was a smart move cause this one was also highly rated by both critics and audience.
In this series, Neagley was shown to have her own struggle with her past, family and surroundings. It was interesting to see her dealing with those challenges, but obviously there would always be comparison with its main series. For me, this one was a bit different as Neagley was living in one city working in one place which would make her so called adventures be more limited to smaller area with most likely the same people. I am really sure that if this series is renewed, the 3 characters who worked together with Neagley would definitely become part of the main cast, whereby Reacher always worked by himself and only join forces with different people in each season.
Another thing that I noticed different was the investigation in here felt a bit like in police procedural series and the action though still very good were not abundant like Reacher. However, this one did not shy away from some violent fights and killing bad guys was not a taboo thing. And honestly that season finale was really amazing and truly satisfying with few quite heart warming scenes. This series was developed by Reacher's creator Nick Santora (FUBAR, The Fugitive TV series etc) and Nicholas Wootton (writer of Chuck, Prison Break etc). Lee Child the author of Reacher books was also credited as Executive Producer of this series.
In addition to the main cast above, there were other support characters like Neagley's boss Gerald York (Joel Keller - Fellow Travelers mini series etc), members of Echo Canyon Farm Judith (Rebecca Liddiard - Frankie Drake Mysteries TV series etc) and Mandy (Jessica Clement - Night of the Reaper etc), Neagley's father Calvin (Tyrone Benskin - Lunar Sway etc) and several others including appearance of familiar face of Peter Outerbridge (I Will Find You mini series etc). It would not have been complete if Alan Ritchson did not appear here which he did became guest star and added the fun element. All the lead cast portrayed their characters nicely with great chemistry. Neagley still looked as tough as in the original series with some vulnerabilities that were only shown here, while Riley aka Rats became a solid partner, plus Renee whose intelligence was great value & last but not least the young Keno who had developed a lot from beginning till the end.
Overall I liked watching this show as it definitely compliment the main series. It had a bit of similar characteristics with Reacher (good quality action and investigation) but also distinct difference like limited in one location and working together with most likely same group of people, plus a bit police procedural. I also felt that Reacher was a little bit more high stake and have more humor that made me chuckled. This series was also well received by critics with high rating which hopefully translate to renewal as I would not mind watching another season. And with same 8 episodes that was released in full on the same day (unlike its original series), there was no need to wait for several weeks to complete. So if you like Reacher and want to see more of Neagley who was introduced there, then this series would definitely satisfy you. Happy watching!
