Brief Story Line
Ulysses (Bob Odenkirk - Nobody 2, Fargo season 1 etc) just got a job as temporary/subsitute Sheriff in a small town of Normal in Minnesota and having the support from Deputy Blaine (Ryan Allen - Between TV series etc) and Deputy Mike (Billy MacLellan - In the Dark TV series etc). His job seemed to be a very simple one and Ulysses just need to pass 8 weeks till he moved to another job, although the Mayor Kibner (Henry Winkler - Barry TV series, The Waterboy etc) did offer in case he want to become permanent Sheriff. During this short period, Ulysses got to know some of the towns people including Moira the bartender (Lena Headey - Gunpowder Milkshake, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles TV series etc) whom he befriended and former Sheriff's kid Alex (Jess McLeod - One of Us is Lying TV series, It's A Wonderful Knife etc).
Unfortunately for Ulysses, a couple from out of town Lori (Reena Jolly - Best Christmas Pageant Ever etc) and Keith (Brendan Fletcher - Braven, Caitlin's Way TV series etc) were planning to rob the bank. And all hell broke lose as Ulyssess found that this town was anything but normal.
So what would happen to Ulysses and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
When I watched the opening scene of this film, I thought to myself that it did not feel like what I was expecting. As the story progressed, I felt the movie was going in a rather slow pace but not up to the level of boring. It was somehow made interesting as there were few scenes which hinted something unusual and a bit strange (not the kind of eerie/horrifying, just odd). Anyway after almost half hour, the film became exciting with the appearance of the two bank robbers. What came after that were pretty remarkable which I did not foresee. It was terrific as it was full of quite explosive (and violent) actions with a bit of dark comedy.
In the last twenty minutes or so, the film seemed to switch gear and I was a bit disappointed at first with the change of pace and the genre switch. But turned out the movie makers still have some ideas and it ended in a satisfying way, albeit with unclarity of how it could be concluded so easily for the town. Anyway I like the story telling here and the action, plus the comedic side which was something that you could not have imagined earlier. I also thought Bob Odenkirk nailed it as the laid back Sheriff who was caught in this big issue in the small town. The rest of the cast were pretty good in their support roles. Aside from those I mentioned, there were few in minor roles including Peter Shinkoda (Midway, Falling Skies TV series etc) as Joe.
The film was dIrected by Ben Wheatley (Meg 2: The Trench, Rebecca etc) and written by Derek Kolstad (creator/writer of John Wick and Nobody movies). It was based on story by him with Bob Odenkirk himself. From what I read, this movie was well received by critics but the Box Office performance was not great as it looked to be losing money against its budget. Btw it was already released in the US since mid April, so I don't think there would be significant increase of audience as it felt like something that would be better appreciated there.
In the end, this film was quite fun and interesting. The action and dark comedy was pretty entertaining and it also has a satisfying conclusion. Bob Odenkirk also gave a convincing performance here & still awesome playing action hero. It only has 91 minutes duration including closing credits without any mid or post end credit scene. So if you are interested in seeing a film with such attribute, then you are welcome to give it a try. For me personally though, I think it's OK enough but not necessarily required to be seen in large screen of a cinema as I believe it's still enjoyable even if you watch it via streaming.
Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
