Brief Story Line
When the body of a young woman was found in the sewer, Detective Park Mu-gyeong (Lee Joon-hyuk - Mercy for None mini series, The Roundup: No Way Out etc) was assigned to investigate the case. He was assisted by energetic rookie detective Jae-hyeon (Shin Hyun-seung - Han River Police TV series etc) who was eager to prove his worth. The body was later identified as the Boudoir luxury brand regional head Sarah Kim (Shin Hye-sun - Following, Welcome to Samdal-ri TV series etc) by her friend Jeong Yeo-jin (Park Bo-kyung - Genie, Make a Wish TV series, Hopeless etc) who was also the largest investor of Boudoir.
As Detective Park dug deeper, he realized there was a lot of mysterious things involving Sarah and her past which led him to believe it revolved around the Boudoir brand itself.
So what actually happened to Sarah and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
Honestly in the beginning I was having difficulty to keep myself interested with the series as despite the early finding of the dead body, the story felt like it was not moving forward fast enough. It had a slow pace and I was rather confused of where the series was heading. And the various flashbacks from other people's point of view did not make it easier to understand either. However, I still kept on watching as I was getting more curious from the second episode, especially with more information revealed as the story progressed till its conclusion on the 8th episode.
Once again if you have frequently read my previous posts, you would know that I always liked a limited series as it generally has a conclusive ending which this one indeed provided. From my point of view, this series was really intricate and the mystery was complex with layers of background story that kept me intrigued. I had to compliment the writer Chu Song-yeon in what seemed to be writing debut. All 8 episodes here were directed by Kim Jin-min who had directed several Netflix original series like My Name, Extracuricular etc. Each episode has duration between 39-51 minutes with my favorites the 3rd and the 7th episode. I also liked the 6th and the finale which gave a satisfying conclusion.
Now the thing that really stood out in this series was the brilliant acting particularly by Shin Hye-sun who was able to perform her roles wonderfully. I also liked Lee Joon-hyuk and Shin Hyun-seung performance in here. In addition to the names above, there were also appearances of Jung Da-bin (Student A, Glitch TV series etc) as former sales person of Boudoir Woo Hyo-eun, Bae Jong-ok (Kingmaker, Black Out TV series etc) as Chair woman of Samwol Department Store Choi Chae-u, Kim Jae-won (You and Everything Else TV series etc) as Chae-u's personal secretary, Jung jin-young (A Year-End Medley, Queen of Tears TV series etc) as loan shark businessman Hong Seong-sin, Lee Yi-dam (Can This Love be Translated TV series etc) as Kim Mi-jeong and many others in support roles.
As a mystery thriller series, I thought this one was very good in keeping everything under wrap till the last two episodes. It was not a case of serial killer but rather a mystery that evolved as the series progressed, with plenty of twists along the way. The background story of Sarah Kim in each episode was made more interesting with the awesome acting of Shin Hye-sun whom my wife admired greatly due to her amazing acting capability. At the moment of writing, the series had become a global hit in Asia, including making it to number one in Indonesia, which meant that it was a major hit with Netflix subscribers. So if you are fans of K-drama complex mystery thriller series with proper conclusion, then I think you would enjoy this like I did.
