Brief Story Line
The small town of Dahlonega,Georgia was rocked by the finding of a woman's dead body in the forest. Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal - The Accountant 2, Marvel's The Punisher TV series etc) and his partner Priya Patel (Sunita Mani - Death of a Unicorn, GLOW TV series etc) were tasked to investigate the case. However their investigation was disturbed with the appearance of WSK TV station reporter Anna (Tessa Thompson - Creed III, Thor: Love and Thunder etc) & her cameraman Richard (Pablo Shcreiber - ) as they tried to cover the news and made it a huge deal. Anna's action was motivated by her competition with news anchor Lexy (Rebecca Rittenhouse - Maggie TV series, Good on Paper etc).
Aside from the mystery solving, Jack and Anna also had to deal with their personal issues with Anna's mother Alice (Crystal Fox - A Fall from Grace, In the Heat of the Night TV series etc) suffering from Alzheimer and Jack's sister Zoe (Marin Ireland - Materialists, Sneaky Pete TV series etc) being single mother who had to take care of her young daughter.
So what actually happened and how would Jack and Anna deal with their own problems aside from investigating the case? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
To be honest, when I read the synopsis from Netflix, I was under the impression that it would be a pretty light and probably even comedic series. And in the early stage, it looked promising especially with the humorous situation between Jack and Anna which was made clear after few minutes (I would let you see for yourself rather than pointing it out in the brief story line above, in case you did not read it in Netflix). But as the story progressed, it grew a bit heavier and a little dark. The first episode ended with something that I had guessed from the beginning which proved to be correct.
Watching this kind of series, obviously I would try to also solve the mystery and guess what happened plus the real culprit. Once I reached the fourth episode, I had a feeling of the who and the why. And I was so proud of myself as I thought I have deduced everything correctly. Turned out though there was a truly shocking twist that I did not see coming and I made a fatal mistake on the who. It was the part that made me respected the writer and director for keeping all the facts till the very end.
The series apparently was adapted from 2020 Best Selling novel of the same title by Alice Feeney whose other books would be adapted into series as well. It was developed by William Oldroyd (director of critically acclaimed Lady Macbeth and Eileen). He also directed episodes 1, 2 and 6 while the rest were directed by Anja Marquardt (She's Lost Control). From what I read, the series was well received by critics which I did not have any objection and audience seemed to embrace it too, becoming global hit in Netflix (including making it to Top 10 in Indonesia).
Performance of the cast was one of the good thing to my opinion with Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal convincing in their roles, plus having a nice chemistry. Aside from the above who were part of the main cast, there were also the addition of Chris Bauer (The Wire TV series, A Dog's Way Home etc) as Clyde Duffy and Poppy Liu (Space Cadet, No Good Deed TV series etc) as Helen Wang. The series had few recurring cast such as Jamie Tisdale (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Seires etc) as the victim Rachel Hopkins, Mike Pniewski (Reptile etc) as Anna & Lexy's boss Jim Pruss, Dave Maldonado (Sinners etc) as the Sheriff/Jack's boss plus few others. Btw, the series only had 6 episodes with duration of between 39-47 minutes which would explain the short time for me to finish the whole season.
In the end, this was a pretty satisfying mystery mini series with a shocking twist that should please fans of such genre. Although it was not exactly the humorous/light kind like I expected, it was still entertaining for me. So if you are looking for another limited series about murder in small town with a huge plot twist and adapted from best selling novel, then I believe you would enjoy this one. I myself had a pretty good time watching it with my most favorite part that surprising end.
