Brief Story Line
Zara Dunne (Sophie Turner - Do Revenge, Game of Thrones TV series etc) was working at a large investment firm in London that managed numerous accounts from various sources including pension fund. One day a group of people who used nicknames such as London (Jonathan Slinger - A Knight's Tale, Paradox etc), Sniper (Andrew Howard - The Outpost TV series, Taken 3 etc) and several others came to Zara's office and threaten the employees at gun point. They instructed Zara and her colleague Luke (Archie Madekwe - Gran Turismo, Midsommar etc) to transfer large cash out from their firm and left the office building before the police arrived.
DCI Rhys Covaci (Jacob Fortune-Lloyd - Bodies mini series, Midas Man etc) and DI Ellie Lloyd (Ellie James - The Winter King TV series etc) were assigned by Superintendent Nichols (Patrick O'Kane - The Day of the Jackal TV series etc) to investigate the case. They were assisted by an investigator who was expert in Financial cases named Darren Yoshida (Andrew Koji - Black Doves TV series, Snake Eyes: G. I. Joe Origins etc). As they dig deeper, Covaci & Lloyd suspected the case to be not so straight forward, especially with the involvement of unexpected people. Meanwhile Zara was also caught up in the middle of the investigation which would endanger her life.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this series.
End of Brief Story Line
As you might have read from some of my previous posts, you would have known that I like heist stories which showed intelligence and surprising twists. Usually heist story would begin with smaller job and continued with the preparation for a much bigger one while trying to evade law enforcements and finished by the job being completed with some elements of surprise. This series however was a little bit unconventional as it started with the major heist and followed by the investigations to close the case. It was taken from a rather unique perspective that made me quite enjoyed the series.
In addition to the interesting heist, I also liked the fact it only had 6 episodes with duration between 41-53 minutes so it would not take long to finish, plus it was a limited series that guaranteed proper conclusion. The series had an ending that was pretty satisfying for me. There was a rather big surprise towards the end which I only realized very late (in the mid of final episode), although that twist made one thing not properly clarified. I could not find any information of the series adapted from anything, which meant the creator, novelist Sotiris Nikias should be applauded for his creativity. The first 3 episodes were directed by Sam Miller (No Good Deed, Luther TV series etc) and the remaining were directed by Hettie Macdonald (The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry, Doctor Who TV series etc).
The cast was full of British actors/actresses which was no surprise as it's a British production. In addition to the names above, there were additional cast of Anastasia Hille (Baptiste TV series etc) as Zara's mother Haley, Harry Michell (Hijack TV series etc) as Zara & Luke's colleague Milo and few others in support roles. But the star of the show was definitely Sophie Turner whose performance was praised by critics and the series itself was quite a critical success. Looked like audience also enjoyed as it already reached Top 10 of Prime Video in several countries. Aside from Sophie Turner, I also liked Archie Madekwe here who convincingly portrayed the character Luke.
The series pace was not too fast but not slow either. The heist to me was also different where the object was an enormous amount of cash (which was why it was said to be the greatest heist in British history). The motive was unusual as well while the financial angle of the heist was interesting and felt intelligent. This was not an action heavy series but rather a heist thriller with little action, although there was quite a long and pretty intense action sequence in the finale.
Overall this was a unique kind of heist series that might not have the excitement of preparing for the job, but the story development was interesting and made me intrigued of how it would resolve. The performance of the cast was a plus point and it also had a satisfying end. So if you are interested in such series that was well received by critics, you are welcome to give it a try. But if you are not too keen with unconventional heist and expected a lot of action, then you might not enjoy this. The choice is yours.
