It was another happy day for me and my wife when just after seeing a good movie on Sunday, she got invited to a screening of another South Korean movie that I thought would be fun just by looking at the title. Without any doubt, we accepted the invitation for the event last night at CGV Grand Indonesia, despite a bit of worry to reach the area due to some of the roads towards there were still closed because of the various demonstration few days earlier. Anyway, my wife and I managed to be there quite on time without hassle and the movie also started only few minutes behind schedule. Well let us get on with the film now.
Brief Story Line
Park Mi-yeong (Ra Mi-ran - Reply 1988 TV series, The Himalayas etc) was a former police woman who was assigned to the public service department after being married to a goofy but very loving husband Ji-chul (Yoon Sang-hyun - Queen of Housewives etc). Meanwhile a rookie police detective named Ji-hye (Lee Sung-kyung - Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok-joo TV series, Love + Sling etc) was given disciplinary sanction due to her over enthusiasm in handling a particular case and was also assigned at the same department with Mi-yeong.
These two were at each others' throats from the beginning and it was a huge challenge to put them in the same department. However, when a report came to their place about a sexual harassment on a young woman which would ruin her life, Mi-yeong and Ji-hye decided to assist her. With the help from an IT expert in the public service named Jang-mi (Choi Soo-young - Man in the Kitchen TV series etc) they tried to expose the people behind this case while trying to avoid problems from their dept. head.
So how would the case conclude and what would happen to the two hard headed police women? Find them all in this hilarious action comedy movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Wow, this was one really funny movie. A film that would give us one hilarious moment after another where we would laugh out loud seeing the many many comedic scenes performed by the two female leads. Ra Mi-ran was truly outstanding as a more senior & ruthless public servant who made people around her a bit "scared" of being scolded. Meanwhile Lee Sung-kyung was so convincing as the fresh idealistic rookie Ji-hye trying her best to make an impression and truly believed the police task was to assist people in need. And when these two were combined, they really became a strong force, especially when facing a case that would ruin the life of women like them.
The thing that made this fun was the interaction between the two ladies. They were both so natural in performing their roles that we truly believed they were actual characters in real life. Especially when one fun fact was revealed after a while which made us really amused by it. And then there was the supporting character of Jang-mi (played nicely by former SNSD girl band: Soo-young) as the really smart IT person who added even more comical moments when together with Mi-yeong and Ji-hye. There were few scenes that my wife and I probably laughed the loudest during these three's moments together.
Aside from these three characters, there were actually other supporting roles that also provided some fun times. Both of us (and I think all the audience) really loved Mi-yeong's husband Ji-chul who was the total opposite of her with his carelessness and awkwardness but at the same time adored his love for his wife. Many times whenever he appeared we would be guessing what other goofiness he would provide. Oh another person that gave us few laughs as well was the very disciplined department head (played by Yeom Hye-ran) who seemed to always be on the alert whenever Mi-yeong or Ji-hye were not on their spot. There were some cameo appearances by notable actors who Korean movies & series lovers could recognize (as my wife and some audience did).
However, even though the movie seemed to be focusing on the comedy, the case itself was actually pretty heavy. It was a quite up to date problem in the society and it also gave some moral message about how the women being the victims of these sexual harassment. Plus it also looked like showing that police women (who might not be appreciated enough) are also able to solve major cases. Although, there might be possibilities such message were buried under the nonstop comedic moments. Btw, there was one rare emotional moment in the middle of the movie which did affect my wife a bit. There were also some actions involved with few fight scenes that truly surprised me as Ra Mi-ran was able to show amazing fighting skills. One fun fact, during the opening credit, the movie title was showing Girl Cops which was the translation of its Korean title, but probably for commercial purpose outside the country, was changed to Miss & Mrs. Cops.
Overall this was a very entertaining movie. A film that was for fun and would be really enjoyable for the audience. It was rated as 17+ in Indonesian cinemas, likely due to the case as well as some foul language. We were having lots of fun watching the entire 107 minutes of the movie which had brief mid post end credit scene. If you are looking for a fresh and amusing comedy film, then this would definitely satisfy you. But do not expect the case solving to be the really top notch with many surprising twists. So when this movie is released on certain cinema chains on 29 May 2019, just go and see this one & have fun.
Happy watching!
