I was kind of looking forward to this movie after my wife and I saw its trailer few times earlier as it reminded us about the funny characters in the first movie. So when it finally premiered yesterday, I was quite happy when it had a 7PM show in the theater near our home which would be easy for us to go to. Well we should start with the movie now.
Brief Story Line
After the events of the original movie, the city Bricksburg had been having multiple attacks from Duplo invaders for five years which made the city became ruined and the citizens very tough. Except for Emmet (Chris Pratt - Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, Passengers etc) who remained very positive and still thought everything was awesome, despite his girlfriend Lucy (Elizabeth Banks - Pitch Perfect 3, Walk of Shame etc) who wished for Emmet to become more mature.
When the city was under latest attack led by General Mayhem (Stephanie Beatriz - Brooklyn Nine Nine TV series etc), it was in disarray and Lucy with Batman (Will Arnett - Teen Titans Go! to the Movies etc) and few others were kidnapped. Emmet had no choice but toughen himself to save Lucy and her friends from the Systar System queen Whatevra Wana'bi (Tiffany Haddish - Girls Trip etc).
So could Emmet save them all? And what was the real intention of Whatevera Wana'bi? Find them all in this humorous animated movie in the Lego universe.
End of Brief Story Line
This film had the same tone of the original film five years ago where we would be provided the various characters in the Lego form with the main cast remained almost the same and the same dark humor where a lot of references were made relating to the famous characters (especially those DC comics characters). There were many scenes where we could laugh or at least chuckled, usually because of the naivety of Emmet, or the craziness of Batman (loved his comments on his own body or brooding & dark past) which was exactly what we loved from his own The Lego Batman Movie.
One thing that people have to realize was that this movie was not a serious film and its humor may not be fun (or understood) by conventional audience, especially children despite its rating for all ages in Indonesian theaters. Although they could have fun looking at the colorful characters and the Systar system kingdom. I loved how the movie makers reminded us that these Lego characters' story was the imagination of a teenaged boy Finn (played by the same actor as in the first movie, Jadon Sand) and his younger sister Bianca (Brooklyn Prince). My wife also noticed how the shooting sound was made by children's voicing like when they were playing make believe.
Aside from the characters who were brought to life by the great cast (my most favorite was definitely Will Arnett's voice of Batman), the film was also very entertaining with the nice and very catchy songs (one of them literally titled "Catchy Song"). There were also few nice songs during the very very long end credit, which did not have any mid or post end credit scenes. But it did have nice photos of Lego created by some people during the early part which Lego fans would most likely loved to see.
As for the story though, if we compared to the original movie, somehow I personally thought this one was not superior. Yes we could still enjoy the film but I actually preferred the first one better, perhaps due to Emmet's more lovable personality there. But that's just my opinion. Oh this movie also had some well known people voicing different characters such as Channing Tatum, Jason Momoa, Cobie Smulders and even Bruce Willis as himself. So watch out for them which would provide some laughs for us as well.
Overall this was an interesting and quite entertaining movie. It had a unique kind of humor. It could feel a bit messy and seemed a bit fast paced but it should provide us few good laughs, with some specific jokes aimed at DC characters or references that were quite noticeable. As this was a direct sequel to the 2014 The Lego Movie, it would be advisable to watch that one first before seeing this one, to understand and appreciate better of the characters in Bricksburg city. So if you like that movie (or any other Lego universe movies), then you would be accustomed to its humor and would love this one as well. But if you are not fans of those films, then this one may not be enjoyable. The choice is yours.
