10x10 - A Surprisingly Better than Expected Psychological Thriller Movie

I found out about this movie from the social media of some Indonesian cinema chains, though it did not get a lot of buzz even until its premier day. Seemed like another movie got more attention as it had an Indonesian actor in it (Read: Mile 22). Anyway since the movie was a psychological thriller that may or may not be everyone's cup of tea, I decided to watch this by myself first (not sure if my wife would have liked it). Well we shall go on with the movie now.

Brief Synopsis

Cathy (Kelly Reilly - Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Yellowstone TV series etc) was a regular woman whose life was torn apart when she was kidnapped by a mysterious man who would later on revealed as Lewis (Luke Evans - The Girl on the TrainMessage from the King etc). Cathy was brought into Lewis' house and put in a soundproofed cell the size of 10 x 10 square feet. She was stressed out and confused of why she was kidnapped by Lewis.

During this kidnapping, Lewis would go on and on asking her questions that seemed more like an interrogation. So why would Cathy be kidnapped? Find them all in this psychological thriller drama.

End of Synopsis

To my surprise this movie was actually pretty enjoyable. I did not have any expectations at all since the rating was not spectacular and it did not garner a lot of attention. But I found myself to be very intrigued by the mystery surrounding the kidnapping. Naturally being a psychological thriller which would usually be a slow burner, the first 10 minutes was a bit too slow and seemed uninteresting. But once the kidnap scene started, then the suspense would follow.

One thing that was funny was that as the movie progressed, I could sense that it was directed by a female, and when I checked later on, it was indeed directed by Suzi Ewing (her previous works were mostly short films). There was a girl power feel in this movie as shown by the strong Cathy's character. And even though the movie's title seemed to suggest that it would be entirely shot in that room, apparently the scene were majority shot outside the room itself. Which made it a bit confusing why it had this kind of title.

The interesting part of this movie to my personal view was how the story unfolded and giving us mysteries and twists which were quite surprising. The terror on Cathy from beginning felt violent but not to the point of very disturbing to see. In fact, as the story continued, I believe the mood of audience a bit shifted. You would really have to see this movie to understand what I meant. Another good point that I noticed from this film was the attention to details (one of the best example was the gun's bullets).

The movie had some good background music and sometimes the silence also added to the suspense.  The film focused entirely on the 2 main characters and only had few additional brief appearance from other characters. Overall as a psychological thriller, I think this one was quite satisfying. It may not win the hearts of critics but I personally felt it deserve appreciation for its originality and the attention to details that may not be considered by other film makers. The duration of this movie was quite short and only less than 1.5 hour including the end credit scene which did not have any mid or post scene.

So if you are looking for a good enough psychological thriller with few surprising twists, then you can give this a try. But if you are into more action movie or you prefer your psychological thriller to be very disturbing and really suspenseful from start to finish, then perhaps you could try other movies. The choice is yours.
