Searching - A Unique and Wonderfully Done Mystery Thriller Drama Movie

After playing in Indonesian cinemas for few days, I finally got the chance to see this movie last night. We were doubtful at first whether we should go out and see this since my wife was not feeling really well from the day before. But she convinced me that she was fit enough to go to the cinema which was very near my home anyway. Well let's get on with the movie now.

Brief Synopsis

David Kim (John Cho - Harold & Kumar series, Star Trek reboot series etc) was a single father whose daughter Margot (Michelle La) was still in high school. One morning he was unable to get hold of Margot and realized that she was missing. Panic with the thought of losing her, David had to report the incident to the police. The lead investigator of her case was Detective Rosemary Vick (Debra Messing - Will & Grace TV series, Open Season etc) who was very dedicated in helping David.

So what happened to Margot? Would she ever be found? Find them all in this very unique thriller movie.

End of Brief Synopsis

Wow this movie was really greatly made. It may not have been the first movie to be shown entirely through the point of view from computer or handphone screens, but it was the first such movie that my wife and I ever saw. And this one was truly amazing. From the first moment when we were shown the setting up of the older version of Microsoft system (which brought a lot of nostalgic feelings to both of us), would give us a hint of how the movie would be done.

What made the movie so unique was that even if it was shown through those point of views, it was able to bring such a gripping suspense and tension to us audience. The pace was steady and the mystery surrounding the missing Margot was very intriguing and the movie also successfully toying with our emotions. Even during the first few minutes, the film already had an emotional moment which was very touching and affected my wife as well.

I also felt that the acting of John Cho here as the father of missing teen was amazing. He was really really convincing and his expressions really could tell us all what he must have been feeling or thought. Debra Messing was also great in here in her role as the lead detective, while Michelle La who played as the missing daughter was also convincing. (There was one scene that my wife noticed where her facial expression changed very drastically in few seconds). There were also other important supporting roles by Joseph Lee as David's brother Peter and Sara Sohn (Furious 7, Sense8 TV series etc) as Margot's mother Pamela. I thought the director Aneesh Chaganty in his first full feature film directorial debut was very good in making this movie (he was also the co-writer). Btw, the movie was produced by Timur Bekmambetov who also produced similar type of movie but with a horror genre Unfriended & its sequel, plus directed movies such as Wanted, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter etc.

The movie main attraction here was definitely the story and the unique story telling plus of course the mystery itself. I was unable to guess what the actual ending would be and I got to say that I enjoyed everything of this movie. My wife was also among the satisfied audience who were all very absorbed with the film and were fully focused & concentrated watching it. Which made it a wonderful experience to see this in cinema as usually there would be few annoying audience who could not stop speaking to one another, or playing handphone and so on. Before I forgot, this film did not have gruesome violent scene and foul language, so it was good enough for teenagers (hence the 13+ rating).

Overall this movie was very interesting and well made. I honestly could not see any flaw and I enjoyed the entirety of the movie. There was nothing that I could complain at all and I would recommend the mystery thriller fans to see this movie. However, for those who do not appreciate watching a movie with the point of view from computer or handphone screens, then this might not be the best option. But those who want to try and see something different, then I believe this movie would definitely be to your liking. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
