As the second film of my movie marathon day with my wife yesterday, we chose to see this one at 7.15 PM show. I have seen the trailer to this movie previously and it did raise my interest to see it. It was also a new movie which only premiered on Friday. Anyway, what's the story about?
Brief Story Line
Movie started with the scene of a man in white shirt entering a house where dead bodies were scattered through the floors. As he was about to enter the room where the perpetrator was threatening the person inside, the scene moved to a different location. It was a consultancy room where the parents of young Christian Wolff who was an autistic child were discussing the possible method of treating him. The neurologist was telling them that Chris needed to be treated differently due to his autism. In the room also there was his brother who seemed normal and another girl who also seemed to be autistic. Chris was a genius in mathematics and has ability to put things together, which was shown when he was able to putting the jigsaw puzzle so fast. He also had the need to complete his task and would be very disturbed if it's not done.
Years later, Chris had been an adult and opened a small accounting firm. He (Ben Affleck - Good Will Hunting, Gone Girl and many others) was portrayed as a non-expressive accountant with lots of ideas on how to do ensure his client is well protected. Meanwhile a senior treasury agent named Raymond King (J.K.Simmons - Spiderman trilogy, Juno, Whiplash etc) was interviewing potential new agent named Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson - Spartacus and Arrow TV series). Her first task was to find out "The Accountant" who was the person responsible to handle the books of various clients like the mob and many dangerous people.
It was revealed later that Chris was always following the advice from his confidante through his phone. She was the one providing assistance and even potential client. Her latest suggestion was to handle a legitimate client for once, instead of the usual illegal ones. This time it was a robotic company who had a discrepancy in their figures found out by a junior accountant Dana Cummings (Anna Kendrick - The Twilight saga, Pitch Perfect etc). He was met by Rita (Jean Smart - Disney's the Kid, Sweet Home Alabama etc) who was the sister of the company's owner Lamar (John Lithgow - 3rd Rock from the Sun TV series, Interstellar etc) during the first round of interview.
Meanwhile we were also shown a mysterious gun for hire (John Bernthal - The Walking Dead TV series, The Wolf of Wallstreet etc) who seemed to be working for various clients and not afraid of killing. In addition, there was another character of Francis (Jeffrey Tambor - Hellboy, The Hangover part 2 & 3, etc) who basically was the mentor for Chris in the finance of criminal world shown in some flashbacks.
After finding out the problem on the figures discrepancy, Chris realized that there was something more than just money scheming. Both he and Dana were now being chased by professional hit men. To make things more complicated, Agent Medina was slowly able to find out who "The accountant" was.
So could Chris save Dana? Could they got away from the chase of the hit men and also the treasury agents? Find them all in this interesting thriller movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Well this movie was certainly an enjoyable one. It was a refreshing thing to finally watch an original movie as this was not a remake, or reboot, or prequel or sequel. It was a really creative way of making Christian, an autistic person who was a mathematical genius and worked really well with numbers but at the same time able to efficiently killing bad people in cold blood. He was portrayed as perhaps more like vigilante and leading dual life.
Although the action of the movie were not a lot (it's not a full action movie), but all of them were cool. The gun shooting (especially the precision of long range shooting) and the close hand fight scene were awesome. As I mentioned earlier, this is is thriller movie. So that would mean there would be some twists and surprises along the way. There would be 2 or 3 twists & surprising moments at almost the end of the movie. I was only able to guess one, but I was totally blown away by the other 2. The movie also did quite a number of flashback scenes in order to slowly reveal the background and also providing the twists. Even my wife was also surprised at the most shocking twist in the end (as usually she was able to guess before I did).
Anyway, I hope that this movie would be successful commercially so they could make a sequel of it as I really like the main character. And if you watch till completion, you would also see that the potential for creating sequel is definitely there. It is also a cool way for the movie producer to slip nicely about the potential that autistic children have and the moral message that they can be functioning normally if families are supportive. Ooh there was also 1 brief scene seemed to be showing it was done in Jakarta and brief Indonesian language which gave the audience a little bit of fun surprise.
So if you are looking for thriller movie with fresh and original lead character and some cool action scenes plus occasional surprising twists, then this movie is definitely worth a try. But be reminded that this is not a suitable movie for children due to the violent action scenes.
Happy watching!

PS: My wife and I personally did not enjoy the studio we watched the movie as the air conditioner was either not switched on or at very high temperature and we had to endure the heat & mosquitoes in the theater for almost 2 hours. We could only feel some breeze for like the last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie. After mentioning this to the customer service, it seemed that the personnel might have thought the theater was not crowded and did not see the need to switch to cool temperature. I hope that our complaints to the customer service of Blitz Megaplex Grand Indonesia were recorded and taken care of so this situation can be avoided in future.
