(2026) Masterplan - Very Standard Heist Movie with Nothing that Truly Excelled

I read an article somewhere that there would be new movie released in Prime Video on Friday. Since it was about a heist and the premise looked interesting, I was intrigued to find out. However I came home rather late on Friday after my movie marathon and thought it would be better to watch it on the following day when I was fresher. OK, let us get on with the movie then.

Brief Story Line

Jay (Victor Belmondo - Lie With Me, Fly Me Away etc) and Chiara (Simona Tabasco - Immaculate, The White Lotus season 2 etc) were both professional thieves who had their own specialty. When they were recruited by a mysterious person who later revealed to them as master thief Roger (Stanley Tucci - The Devil Wears Prada 2, Fountain of Youth etc) to steal the famous painting Mona Lisa, Jay and Chiara were skeptical at first. But after Roger informed them that they were his children and believed they could pull the heist as a family, they finally agreed to work on it.

Things gotten complicated though when someone from Roger's past, the crime boss Bruno (Mark Ivanir - Emilia Pérez, The Gordin Cell TV series etc) appeared and seemed to know about their heist plan.

So what would happen to the three of them and how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

As I said earlier, this movie was about a heist which is a favorite genre of mine. And this one actually started off quite interesting showing the ability of the thieves. But once Stanley Tucci appeared, it became more fun as he was able to bring humor to the film. Just like in any other heist movies, this one also had some scenes showing the preparation, but the most exciting part would have to be the heist itself. I liked the way they performed the stealing and it was pretty suspenseful at times. However, I did feel it was rather imbalanced with one of them despite having important part but the heaviest risk only fell on the other one.

It would not have been a fun heist movie without any surprising twist. From the beginning, somehow I suspected of something which proved to be correct and made that supposedly shocking twist did not surprise me at all. There was something before the climax end that I did not predict though, but subsequently everything was pretty standard. Sadly aside from the heist which used sophisticated technology and Stanley Tucci's performance, the movie did not offer anything else. The chemistry between Jay and Chiara was not convincing and the villain did not feel villainous enough.

There were not a lot of major characters in the film. Other than those four, the rest were support cast in minor roles. The movie itself was directed by Thomas Vincent (Role Play etc) and written by Giacomo Durzi (creator of The Great Game TV series etc), Alessandro Fabbri (creator of Citadel: Diana TV series etc) and Alberto Vignati (writer of One Step from Heaven TV series etc). I do not believe critics were impressed with this one, though it is still early and it might grew on them in future. And since it was just released two days ago, I cannot see if it was liked by streamers.

Overall I do not have a lot to say about this movie. It had flashes of interesting part during the heist which was fun and there was a bit of intensity as well before it finished. However the twists were not truly satisfying with that major one I could have guessed from the beginning and the rest of the twists were not too big. I did like the light humor and Stanley Tucci who was OK enough but I was not too happy with the performance of the other two lead with their unconvincing chemistry. Oh and the scenery of Paris at night (although it did not show the real condition), with the beautiful Lake Como was lovely to watch. So if you are hoping for a great heist movie with awesomely done stealing & plenty of twists supported by wonderful cast, then this one would not satisfy you. But if you just want to have a little bit of fun watching Stanley Tucci and lower your expectation, then you could give this one a try. I myself was just OK with this one though I did have higher hope.
