Mutiny - A Good Old Fashion & Brutal Action Thriller in Tight Space that Should Entertain Fans of Such Genre

As soon as my wife and I were aware of the upcoming Jason Statham movie, we already had plans to see it. But as it was released on the day we were going out of town, we decided to see it yesterday two days after its premiere date. Despite feeling tired from our trip, we were still excited to see the movie in the cinema just walking distance from our home. Without further ado, here's more on the movie.

Brief Story Line

Cole Reed (Jason Statham - ShelterWrath of Man etc) had been working as body guard for years protecting his boss Timu Campallo (Ramon Tikaram - Pennyworth TV series, Endgame etc), the owner of a large shipping company named KGM. After an incident where Cole was framed for a crime, he went on board a cargo ship owned by KGM with its Captain Marko Madsen (Roland Møller - SkyscraperCitadel TV series etc) to find the truth.

While on the ship, Cole found out the person responsible for the crime and sought vengeance. With the unexpected help from third mate Angie Ellis (Annabelle Wallis - MercyThe Mummy 2017 reboot etc), Cole  had to fight against the whole crew who were adamant to protect their cargo.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

For those who had frequently read my blog, you would have known that Statham is one of the action stars that my wife and I liked to see. The movies with him as the lead star usually had standard formula of leaving normal life after years in service (Ex military/agent/police) and was forced to fight for the truth or vengeance against many many bad guys. And this time it was quite faithful to this model which did not surprise me at all. The reason why both of us always enjoyed his movies was because we got to see him kick ass and punishing the bad guys.

This film was no different as Statham's character Cole Reed was awesome in hand to hand and gun fights. It was entertaining seeing the villains beaten brutally with pretty graphic violent scenes especially during the killing of the goons. The most enjoyable action sequence was definitely in the finale fight which was pretty balanced and well choreographed. Not sure how many times my wife clapped her hands feeling satisfied with the fate of those bad guys. Btw the movie only had short duration of 1 hour 35 minutes including closing credits without any mid or post end credit scene. The first 15-20 minutes was quite OK, but things really got interesting once Cole was on board the ship.

Aside from the names above, the film had few support cast such as Chaneil Kular (Sex Education TV series etc) as Timu's son Kameron, Jason Wong (In the Grey, Guy Ritchie's The Covenant etc) as Cole's trusted guy Taran, Simon Kluth as Jaran, familiar face the British Adrian Lester (Ponies TV series, Euphoria etc) who portrayed US Navy Captain Adam Spencer and few others. It was directed by Jean-François Richet whose past works included Blood Father and that entertaining Gerard Butler's starrer Plane. The movie itself was written by Lindsay Michel and J. P. Davis who also wrote Plane, The Contractor etc. I read that it had mixed review which meant it was not heavily criticized by critics but not sure yet if it is well received by audience as it just had its wide release in US yesterday.

In the end this might just be another standard Statham movie. But if you love it like me and my wife, then most likely you would enjoy it. There was nothing special to the story and plot & certainly not the best out there, however it gave us the pleasure of good old fashion action. And since it was done in the confined space of a cargo ship, it made the intensity felt more cause there was not a lot of place to go & the brutal fights have to be done in tight places. So if you just want to have some fun in the cinema watching Statham doing his best, then you are welcome to see it in the big screen with nice sound system. But if you want to see a gritty film with wonderful story & good character development, then this one is not for you.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
