Alienoid: Return to the Future - Second Part of the Hit 2022 Fantasy Sci-fi Action Movie that Provided Satisfying Conclusion

When I found out about this latest South Korean movie to hit the Indonesian theater, I was quite surprised as I did not know there would be a sequel to the 2022 film. This made me quite intrigued, but since I never saw the first movie before, I had to search for it via online streaming. Luckily it was available and I watched it on Saturday with my wife, before we went to see the new one in theater yesterday. OK, why don't I just get to it.

Brief Story Line (1st and 2nd paragraph were from the first movie)

Guard (Kim Woo-bin - Our Blues TV series, The Con Artists etc) and Thunder (voiced by Kim Dae-myung (The Drug King, Hospital Playlist TV series etc) were aliens who have been using people on earth as prison for their criminals for many years. They could come back and forth in time to catch those who somehow managed to escape. During one of their mission in 1380, they found a baby and brought her to the year 2012, named her Yi-an (Choi Yu-ri) & raised her for 10 years. But Guard's behavior was very weird and attracted the attention of Min Gae-in (Lee Hanee - PhantomThe Fiery Priest TV series etc), the aunt of a student who was best friend with Yi-an. When the latest batch of criminals were sent to earth, it created complication as they included the rebel Controller who was put inside Detective Do-seok (So Ji-sub - Confession, My Secret Terrius TV series etc) and wanted to turn earth into a place they could live freely but uninhabitable for humans. This could only be stopped by the Divine Blade hold by Guard.

Meanwhile in the year 1391, Mureuk (Ryu Jun-yeol - The Night Owl, Reply 1988 TV series etc), a young Taoist and swordsman was caught in the fight over the Divine Blade with the mysterious woman who shoots thunder, later on revealed to be adult Yi-an (Kim Tae-ri - Space Sweepers, Twenty Five Twenty One TV series etc), a vicious monk Ja-jang (Kim Eui-sung - Rampant, Under the Queen's Umbrella TV series etc) and the mages Heug-seul (Yum Jung-ah - Smugglers, Snowdrop TV series etc) & Cheong-woon (Jo Woo-jin - Hard Hit, Narco Saints TV series etc).

Continuing where the first film left off, Mureuk still trying to find out the importance of the Divine Blade while helping Yi-an. But it would be more challenging with the appearance of the mysterious blind man called Nong-pa (Jin Seon-kyu - Extreme Job, Through the Darkness TV series etc) who was also trying to get the Divine Blade. Yi-an who had been trying to get the Blade had to work fast and return to the future (2022) to save the world.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Originally I only wanted to put down the second movie's story line here, but my wife suggested that I also share briefly on the first movie since I never wrote a post on that. It was a great idea as this was a second part of a very long story, which meant it would be totally confusing without knowing what it was all about. Anyway after having real fun watching the first film the day before, I had high hopes when seeing this one. But it turned out that although it was still exciting to see, my wife and I enjoyed the first part more.

We felt that this sequel somehow lack the hilarity of the first part where we could laugh out loud so many times. In addition, I think the reduced screen time of Guard and Thunder also contributed to the reduction of fun part. Most of it all, I somehow felt the story in the present time was not too intense. Unlike in the predecessor where both time lines were unique and interesting, as the funniest moments happened during the 14th century but the suspense & mystery was strongly felt in the present. However, despite those few shortcomings, we still liked the climax part and we also loved the twists here, though one or two might be a bit obvious. And that surprise towards the end related to one character in the present was quite astonishing in a good way.

My wife and I were really in awe of the wonderful special effects and the amazing action scenes. Our experience seeing this in the cinema was really worthwhile since it was on a large screen with bright colors and good sound system. It was our first experience in this theater as usually we went to a different cinema chain which we did not really like due to its lack of brightness and poor sound effects. Only thing that we were not so satisfied with the studio was its seating arrangement which were not steep enough, resulting to difficulty in watching if the people in front of us was too tall. Btw, this second movie had few flashbacks and a bit of recap in the beginning to refresh our memory, very useful for those who saw the original 2 years ago.

The cast here in general were pretty decent. Our favorites were Ryu Jun-yeol who sometimes reminded us of Stephen Chow in his early days, and the two mages Yum Jung-ah and Jo Woo-jin who provided many hilarious moments. They were given larger portion here and managed to make us laugh quite a lot with their antics. Aside from those names that I already mentioned, the movie also had plenty of support cast such as Shin Jung-geun (Racket Boys TV series, Tunnel etc) and Lee Si-hoon as Right Paw and Left Paw, Yoon Gyung-ho (Start Up, The Worst of Evil TV series etc) as Sam Shik and few others. Oh we were also amazed by how good the casting department was as they could find Choi Yu-ri to portray the child Yi-an who resembled Kim Tae-ri a lot. The director Choi Dong-hoon who also wrote both movies did a great job, which should not come as a surprise considering he directed some major box office films like The Big Swindle, The Thieves, Assassination and many others.

Overall this was still a fun sci-fi action comedy movie with some well executed action scenes that were enjoyable and got some funny moments. My wife and I were pleased with the movie's conclusion and thought it was a good enough ending. We both waited till the closing credit was finished but there was no mid or post end credit scene which likely meant there would be no third part. So if you like the first movie and wanted to find out what happen to all the people, then by all means you should see this one.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
