A Working Man - Another Satisfying Statham's Action Thriller Movie

Though the movie was released only this week, technically it is still one of the film that I tried to catch up after my vacation. Since yesterday I was allowed to leave work earlier before the long holiday, together with my wife we were able to see the movie at a more convenient time. OK, why don't I just get to it then.

Brief Story Line

Levon Cade (Jason Statham - Meg 2: The TrenchFast and Furious: Hobbs & Shaw etc) was a former Royal Marine who left the force to be a good father to his young daughter Merry (Isla Gie). He chose to work as a construction worker for the company owned by Joe Garcia (Michael Peña - Fantasy IslandThe Lego Ninjago Movie etc). When Joe's daughter Jenny (Arianna Rivas - Prom Dates etc) was kidnapped by some human traffickers, Levon was asked to find her.

Though very reluctant at first as he wanted to leave his old life behind, Levon decided to help find Jenny. With a bit of help from his old friend from the forces Gunny (David Harbour - Gran TurismoHellboy 2019 version etc), he started his own investigation which led him to some very dangerous people.

So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

Well as expected, this movie was very satisfying in term of action. My wife and I loved all the action here as they were well executed, showing the amazing moves by our favorite action star Jason Statham. His ability in defeating the bad guys always amazed us as they were done swiftly and convincingly. And there were plenty of them throughout the whole film with the climax that was totally awesome and violent. It was also great to see the villains being punished so brutally by Levon.

Looking at those action sequence, I was pretty sure that the movie would be R rated which turned out to be correct. It was rightly classified for 17+ in Indonesia and I was pleasantly surprised to see no children were seeing this yesterday in the studio as it would be disturbing and not suitable for them anyway. The movie itself was directed by David Ayer who was experienced in making violent action films including The Beekeeper, Suicide Squad etc. During opening credits there was also the name of Sylvester Stallone as one of the producers and writer, together with Ayer himself. I also noticed that it was based on novel titled "Levon's Trade" written by Chuck Dixon.

The main attraction in the movie was definitely Jason Statham who was given more screen time to show his acting (and not just fight fight fight). Although to be honest, I felt the investigation was done overly long and a bit strange cause once Levon find the person responsible, I thought he would have immediately go for him. Instead it was let to drag for a while where the victim could have been killed already. Good thing it gave us more of Statham's action which we certainly did not mind. The other well known cast like David Harbour and Michael Peña were given smaller roles here. Aside from those names, there were additional cast like Jason Flemyng (Pennyworth TV series, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button etc) as Russian mob's captain Wolo Kolisynk, Noemi Gonzalez (The Valet etc) as Jenny's mother Carla, Maximilian Osinski (Ted Lasso TV series etc) as Dimi and some others.

Overall my wife and I were delighted with this movie as the action was wonderful. We were satisfied looking at the very bad people executed by Levon. The story was simple and easy to comprehend though the investigations could have been done more briefly and not overly dragged. Its duration was 116 minutes that did not have mid or post end credit scene. So if you are into movie starring Jason Statham which would guarantee cool actions, then you would enjoy this. But if your preference is a greatly written investigation movie with occassional actions, then you might be less satisfied with this. The choice is yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars
