Brief Story Line
John Kramer aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell - 12 Feet Deep, The Quick and the Dead etc) decided to go to Mexico for a special treatment for his cancer. He met with Doctor Cecilia Pederson (Synnøve Macody Lund - Ragnarok TV series etc) who worked together with other people like, nurse Valentina (Paulette Hernandez) and brain surgeon Mateo (Octavio Hinojosa). He also met with another cancer patient Parker (Steven Brand - The Scorpion King, Teen Wolf TV series etc) who claimed to have had success in his treatment.
After the operation though, John returned to his usual self and together with Amanda (Shawnee Smith - Anger Management TV series, Christmas vs. the Walters etc), they began to play their games on their latest victims.
So how would the story conclude? You could find out in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
OK after seeing this movie, I could understand why critics like it. The film seemed to have a proper story with deeper character development, especially on John Kramer. I thought he gave a convincing performance as someone who was very sick and losing hope but changed his attitude as soon as he found out something. However, such focus did make the film to be more dramatic especially the first half hour which might be boring for some audience (myself a little bit). It was definitely the reason this movie had the longest duration of almost 2 hours while the previous installments were shorter and focused more on the games.
Now what surprised me the most was the movie did not seem to be censored at all despite the gruesome violence and gore nature. The sadistic games were what audience were looking for in SAW movies and this one did not disappoint. Obviously with no cut scenes made the experience more complete. There was a twist in the film which was OK, even though I think some people could already foresee it before.
I read that this film was direct sequel to the original Saw and prequel to Saw II. This made me regretted a bit for not watching those movies again to provide better knowledge as there were few things I felt were related with them. Due to that, I was not able to fully appreciate the scenes. Oh there was a mid end credit scene which was great as it gave a bit of closure and had significance for fans of the series. I am not sure if there would be another sequel or not (chances are pretty strong as it had a fairly commercial success), but if they do, probably they need to make it a sequel of Saw II and prequel to Saw III? Will let the producers decide.
The director of this movie was Kevin Greutert who also directed Saw VI and Saw 3D, so he already had prior experience. Aside from the cast I mentioned above, there were also other characters like Gabriela (Renata Vaca), the taxi driver Diego (Joshua Okamoto) and a familiar face of Michael Beach (Super Intelligence, S.W.A.T TV series etc) as fellow member of cancer support group. One person gave a surprising appearance that could only be understood if you have seen the previous movies (not the spinoff Spiral or Jigsaw).
Overall this was an OK enough sequel in the Saw horror franchise. It had an interesting story focusing more on the villain though it made the intensity less felt especially in the first half hour. The games were very suspenseful as usual and gave a very chilling feeling, definitely not for the weak heart or the ones who are easily disgusted. Personally to me, there was one dissatisfying conclusion on one character, while the rest were good. So if you are fans of Saw movies, then likely you would enjoy this one with the plenty of references from the past series. But for people who had never seen any before and hoping for a nonstop terror film, would probably be bored a bit in the beginning and only had fun in the remaining two third. I myself was more inclined towards the second type.
