Brief Story Line
Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas - Uncharted, Dolittle etc) who had been going on various adventures in the past did not realize that he had used up 8 of his 9 lives. So when the bounty hunter Wolf (Wagner Moura - Narcos TV series etc) was trying to capture him dead or alive, Puss decided to retire and hide himself.
However, Puss later found out there was something that could give him back his 9 lives. So he embarked on an adventure to find it with the help from an unlikely friend the therapy dog (Harvey Guillén - What We Do in the Shadows TV series etc). Unfortunately he had to face competition with Goldilocks (Florence Pugh - Don't Worry Darling, Midsommar etc) and Papa Bear (Ray Winstone - Point Break 2015 remake etc), Mama Bear (Olivia Colman - Ron's Gone Wrong etc) and Baby Bear (Samson Kayo - The Bubble etc). Puss also was reunited with Kitty Softpaws (Salma Hayek - Eternals, Bliss etc) during his quest where they had to face the crime boss Big Jack Horner (comedian John Mulaney) who also had the same intention.
So what would happen to Puss and how would the story conclude? You can find out in this fun movie.
End of Brief Story Line
During the start of the movie, we both just remembered that we should have watched the first film before we see this one as it was the sequel after all. Luckily for us, the story did not seem to be very difficult to understand. But after after the appearance of Kitty Softpaws, it was quite clear that she was related to the previous movie, especially when Santa Colomba was mentioned frequently. This was the part that my wife and I thought would have been nicer if we had seen the 2011 original movie. Nevertheless, the story here was still easily understood and well written as well.
As fans of adventure movie, I liked this one as it was fun and got some exciting scenes that entertained us. And in the theater where it was filled with family and children, most did enjoy it as could be heard from the loud laughter and remarks from them. I particularly liked the intelligent way the writers managed to include characters from folk tales such as the famous Goldilocks and the three bears. This was obviously the trademark of movies in Shrek universe where we could see characters from fairy tales altered in funny way.
The character that we liked in here was the therapy dog that Puss and Kitty called Perrito (or dog in Spanish). He was the embodiment of kind hearted person who did not have any bad thoughts in his mind. Aside from the exciting adventures and the fun chasing sequence by Goldilocks, the Big Jack and the Wolf, the story was actually very good with nice humors. It also had some heartwarming scenes with one or two that was quite touching. The movie was directed by Joel Crawford (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls Holiday TV special) and written by Tommy Swerdlow (Cool Runnings, Snow Dogs etc) and Tom Wheeler who was also the writer of original Puss in Boots.
Overall this was a fun and light adventure movie perfect for the holidays and a great choice for family. It was classified for all ages in Indonesia and Parental Guidance in the US. It had a duration of 102 minutes with very long closing credits to show the various people involved in creating the movie. There was no mid end credit scene, although there was something humorous at the very end if you waited till it was completely finished. So if you wish to see a fun film that would please you after you leave the theater, then this one would fit the category as it did to both of us. If you do have time though, probably better to see the original first before seeing this one (it's easily accessible in one of the streaming service along with 6 seasons of the series).
