Barbarian - A Horror Movie that Felt More Like a Suspenseful and Intense Thriller

I did not notice about this movie till I began searching for newly released films in Disney+ yesterday, and I was intrigued when I read more about it on the internet. So I decided to watch it immediately last night. OK will get to it now.

Brief Story Line

Tess (Georgina Campbell - Krypton TV series, All My Friends Hate Me etc) arrived at the house he rented from Airbnb in Detroit only to find that it was occupied by another man. The man who later on revealed to be Keith (Bill Skarsgård - It Chapter Two and its predecessor, Hemlock Grove TV series etc) had rented through another application.

Due to difficulties to look for another place, Tess decided to stay for the night. And as we could have guessed, things were not as they seemed in that house.

So what would happen to Tess? You can find out in this movie.

End of Brief Story Line

I purposely did not watch the trailer to the movie as with such simple synopsis, I was sure that the plot would have been revealed in the trailer and it would not provide me the surprise effect. Anyway this movie started off pretty standard with the introduction of the characters. It did not take too long for something weird to happen, but surprisingly the film only became totally suspenseful after around half hour or so. Luckily I was not too bored waiting for it to happen and I could still enjoy, likely due to the quite nice characterization of Tess and Keith by Georgina and Bill respectively.

What caught me by surprise though was how smart the insertion of the character AJ Gilbrade (played so nicely by Justin Long - Jeepers Creepers, Alvin and the Chipmunks movies etc). It totally made sense and not felt forced at all. And that unconventional scene after more than half of the movie also showed the intelligence of the director and writer Zach Cregger. No wonder he got praise for his works in here. Although one thing that I thought was a bit too standard was how people seemed to go towards danger despite knowing it would not be anything good.

Anyway, without revealing the plot, I felt that the story was really good. There were enough intensity and suspense to keep us at our toes. The characters were also what made this movie felt interesting. Aside from Campbell, Skarsgård and Long, there were also few other minor roles. But the one that caught my attention was the character played by Richard Brake (Mandy, Absentia TV series etc). There was also a familiar name to me, i.e Kate Bosworth (Force of Nature, Blue Crush etc) in one of the cast. Btw, the movie was categorized as horror and classified for 21+ due to disturbing scenes, but it was not a supernatural horror type. According to the movie database website, this film has a duration of 102 minutes, which meant that Disney+ did not censor it at all, as it has the same length. Oh during the early part of the closing credit, there were few brief scenes that you could see.

So if you are looking for a horror that felt like a suspenseful and intense thriller with some gruesome scenes and intelligent dialogue plus likable characters, then you could give it a try. It is quite enjoyable for fans of this genre. But if your preference is the supernatural horror type, then this one is not for you.
