Brief Story Line
Evelyn Quan (Michelle Yeoh - Gunpowder Milkshake, Last Christmas etc) and her husband Waymond Wang (Ke Huy Quan - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, The Goonies etc) were Asian Americans who had been owners of a laundromat for years. Unfortunately, the laundromat was being audited by the IRS led by inspector Deirdre (Jamie Lee Curtis - Knives Out, Freaky Friday etc). Evelyn was feeling frustrated due to the audit and also having strained relationship with her only daughter Joy (Stephanie Hsu - The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel TV series etc). Things became more complicated as her father, referred to as Gong Gong (James Hong - Turning Red, Kungfu Panda 3 etc) was coming to visit to celebrate Chinese New Year.
With things seemed to be going wrong in all her life, Evelyn was suddenly shown that unlimited multiverse actually exist in the world where she had different type of lives in each of the other universe. However a dangerous person called Jobu Tupaki was threatening the whole universes and Evelyn seemed to be the only one who could save it.
So what would happen to Evelyn and how would the story conclude? You can find them all in this movie.
End of Brief Story Line
I had heard about this movie for many months already and was hoping to get the chance to see it. However, there did not seem to be any clearance of whether it's going to be released in Indonesian cinemas till few weeks ago when we heard it would be shown after all. That's why even though we were unable to see the film on its special screening day, we immediately see it on the first chance we got. My wife and I were delighted that we could watch it as it was an exciting and fun movie.
The film was segregated into 3 parts with each part showing something unique and provided lots of surprises. After watching it for more than 2 hours, we both came to the same conclusion that the first part was the one we love best. It was full of exciting and hilarious scenes where we would laugh out loud and amazed by some of the absurd situations. And to my surprise, despite it touched a challenging subject of multiverse, we were both able to grasp the idea easily. Aside from those unique scenes, there were also plenty of fighting scenes where Michelle Yeoh was able to show her agility and awesome skills.
The second part of the movie though still had few of funny moments, it somehow felt a bit too weird for us. Luckily there were still some good fight sequence to enjoy. Meanwhile the third part as we have already guessed was the conclusion. It had an ending that I liked and did not have any complains. Oh, the movie was categorized for 17+ and we thought it was totally correct as there were few scenes more suitable for adults. Even in the US it has an R Rating.
I thought Michelle Yeoh was pretty great in here, especially as she managed to pull off playing a middle aged woman who was worn out and finding out the many scenarios of lives she could have had if she took different choices. I also liked Jamie Lee Curtis who was really awesome as the so irritating IRS inspector. In addition to those names, the movie also had some supporting cast such as Jenny Slate (Hotel Artemis, The Secret Life of Pets etc) as a laundromat customer, Harry Shum Jr (Love Hard etc) as chef in a teppanyaki restaurant, Tallie Madel as Joy's girlfriend Becky and few others.
The movie was directed and written by the Daniels (Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert) who gained popular recognition for their works in here. With nothing to be based on, their creativity should definitely be applauded. Btw, there were also the names of Russo brothers as the producers in addition to the Daniels, Mike Larocca and Jonathan Wang. The film was highly regarded by critics which I could definitely understand especially with such concept.
Overall to me this was a great movie that was fun, exciting and entertaining. Aside from the weird stuff in some of the parts, it was still enjoyable to watch. However, it might be a bit too weird for general audience especially if they were comparing it to another superhero movie that was just released few months ago. But for those who like challenging ideas in a movie, this one would be a complete joy. So if you are interested in this kind of movie, then you would certainly love it. Even for casual viewers, watching some of the cool fights would still be interesting.
Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
