Brief Story Line
Mickey Haller (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo - Murder on the Orient Express, Sweet Girl etc) was a defense attorney who was having personal issues in the past year and was very fortunate to have gotten a bunch of new clients that would restart his career. Supported by his ex-wife Lorna (Becki Newton - Ugly Betty TV series etc) and his investigator Cisco (Angus Sampson - Insidious movies etc), Mickey started to take over the cases of various clients from petty crime to the high profile murder case involving tech billionaire Trevor Elliot (Christopher Gorham - Insatiable TV series etc).
Mickey was famed as the Lincoln lawyer since he preferred to work on the Lincoln cars driven by a chauffeur. His latest driver was Izzy (Jazz Raycoyle - My Wife and Kids TV series etc) who he met through one of the cases. Meanwhile he also need to deal with his personal life, especially with his first wife Maggie McPherson (Neve Campbell - Skyscraper, Wild Things etc) who happened to be a Deputy District Attorney and their teenaged daughter Hayley (Krista Warner).
So how would the story conclude? You can find out in this exciting new legal drama series.
End of Brief Story Line
Now this is one really interesting series. I have always been quite fond of US legal/courtroom drama series ever since I watched L. A. Law TV series years ago. It was intriguing how far the lawyers from opposite sides would go in order to win their case and obviously the suspense of finding out which way the decision would go. And this series was no different. It gave all those thrills and then some. Not only it had the big case as the major story arc, but it also had various smaller cases in almost each episode in the first half of the season.
In addition to the exciting court scenes where the defense attorney and the DA presented their arguments, there were also few times where things were only revealed subsequently. However, the so called magic bullet was not that difficult to guess if we really concentrate. In fact the more shocking part would be the final revelation. The first season had only 10 episodes overall which seemed to have had its climax in the 9th episode. But turned out there were still something up the sleeves of the writers as the finale managed to give me few surprises.
This series was developed by Ted Humphrey (one of the producers of The Good Wife TV series) and created for Television by David E. Kelley who was the creator of many legal drama series such as Ally McBeal, Boston Public, Boston Legal and other hits like Doogie Howser, M.D, Picket Fences, Big Sky etc. So it was not that surprising to see this series quite well received by audience & critics. As I said above, there was actually a pretty successful 2011 movie of the same title with Matthew McConaughey in the titular role which would explain if you are familiar with the title. This series itself was based on one of The Lincoln Lawyer novels titled Brass Verdict written by Michael Connelly.
For me, aside from the exciting courtroom "fights", the characters were very interesting as well. Manuel Garcia-Rulfo was pretty convincing as the charming Mickey Haller who started off as a rather washed out attorney due to personal reasons and ended up completely different. Becki Newton was refreshing to see as Lorna and her chemistry with Angus Sampson as Cisco was a joy too. In addition to the names I mentioned earlier, there were also important recurring characters like Detective Griggs (Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine - The Chi TV series etc), the prosecutor of Trevor's case Jeff Golantz (Michael Graziadei - The Young and the Restless TV series etc), Judge Mary Holder (LisaGay Hamilton - The Practice TV series etc) and few others.
Another part that made this series entertaining was the brief revelations given by Mickey Haller to his chauffeur Izzy in the car, since it sort of "educate" us audience in not a patronizing way. The mystery solving was also the part that intrigued me. Overall, this is definitely one of the interesting legal drama series which was not focusing only on 1 case per episode and managed to combine various other issues in the whole 10 episodes. I am not sure if there will be a second season since by the time I wrote this post, I could not find any info on it yet. But looking at the success, I believe it would not take too long for Netflix to announce the good news. After all, there are still few other Lincoln Lawyer novels to be adapted. So if you are interested in such series, I think you would be enjoying this one like I did.
Mike's movie moments rating: 4 out of 5 stars
