(Special Screening) Guns Akimbo - Fun, Entertaining, Freaking Violent and Gore Action Movie with some Stylish Action Sequence

After just seeing the poster to this movie shown in the social media, it was certainly a pleasant surprise when my wife got the invitation to its special screening last night. Prior to the movie's start at 7.15 PM, we were shown several trailers of upcoming movies that would be released in CGV cinemas which also excited us. OK, let's head on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

Miles (Daniel Racliffe - Harry Potter series etc) who worked in video game developer was a nobody and did not seem to have a life. Until one day, due to an incident, Miles was caught up in an underground fight club managed by the ruthless Riktor (Ned Dennehy). In order to save his life Miles had no choice but to fight against the toughest opponent Nix (Samara Weaving - Ready or Not etc) who seemed to kill people for fun.

Things got more complicated with Miles when his ex girlfriend Nova (Natasha Liu Bordizzo - Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny etc) somehow got mixed up with his situation. Not to mention the cops led by Detective Degraves (Grant Bowler) were also after him.

So what would happen to Miles? Find them all in this mindless fun and highly entertaining bloody movie with some exciting fight and gunshooting actions.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow,, that was really a fun and certainly enjoyable movie for me and my wife and I think most of the audience. There were a lot of highly violence scenes that might not be to the liking of few, but I believe in general, this should be entertaining for people who love this kind of action movie. We already got a taste of the violence even from the start and it was almost nonstop till the end.

However, what we loved about this movie was not only some of the stylish action sequence in particular the akimbo style (From wikipedia: a combat technique where two weapons are being used with one in each hand), but also the characterization of this futureless guy Miles by Daniel Radcliffe. My wife and I were amazed by his portrayal and really rooted for him. There were also quite a lot of comedy which resulted from the impossible situation he was in, which justified the movie's genre as action-comedy. Oh I also like this one really fun character (homeless guy) who sadly I could not find the actor's name as he gave lots of funny remarks.

The camera angle taken and the style of direction by Jason Lee Howden was also something that we like. There were some scenes which in particular made my wife felt like we were actually spinning. As I mentioned earlier, the action was really violent with people being killed in a truly gore manner, which is why the movie was categorized as R rating and 17+ in Indonesia. So I hope parents would be wise enough not to bring or allow their underaged kids to see this film as it might traumatize them. But I got to be honest too, that some of the violence might be overkill and left the audience with disgusted feel, though for fans of this kind of action, it would be a real treat.

I also loved the movie's duration which was not overly long around 95 minutes and felt perfect for this kind of genre. There was no mid or post end credit scenes in here. The movie was certainly enjoyable if seen in a theater with good sound system like we did last night, as the sound effects during the actions were amazing. There were some nice background music and songs with one in particular towards the end which felt just perfect for that situation. And those dark humors were also a real nice touch.

Overall this was definitely one of the coolest action movie that my wife and I truly enjoyed. The quite perfect blend of stylish action, dark comedy and video-game-like fight sequence that would entertain fans of such genre. No wonder the special screening was also sponsored (at least I think that's the word) by gaming community. So if you like to see Daniel Radcliffe in this kind of role or Samara Weaving as the crazy killing machine plus all the above credentials, then this is definitely a must-see. But if you are the type of audience who require wonderful script without any plot holes, plus did not enjoy too much violence, this might not be to your liking. The choice is definitely yours.

Mike's movie moments rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars
