I saw somewhere earlier about this series being very popular, and then my wife's brother-in-law mentioned he was told about how good the series was, though he had not seen it. So few days ago I started to watch this one which only got 6 episodes and I thought would be easy to finish. How good was the series? Let us find out more below.
Brief Story Line
Police Sergeant (PS) David Budd (Richard Madden - Live version of Cinderella, Bastille Day etc) who was an Afghanistan war veteran was given a new assignment to protect the British Home Secretary Julia Montague (Keeley Hawes - Death at a Funeral, Line of Duty TV series etc). Having a strong political view with a controversial idea, made Julia became a rather unpopular figure and attracted the unnecessary attention. It also made her become target of threats from some people, thus requiring such protection.
Meanwhile David also had his own personal problem, since he was suffering PTSD and became distant with his wife Vicky (Sophie Rundle). During his work, David would be caught up in the middle of politic power play and facing some real life threatening dangers towards his primary Julia. To make things worse, there were also potential terrorists acts looming London which might impact Julia's safety.
So how would the story continue? Find them all in this heavy, dramatic & suspenseful action, drama, thriller short series.
End of Brief Story Line
When watching the pilot episode, I was quite caught up and felt it was very suspenseful especially in the first 20 minutes or so. But after those parts, the story cooled down a bit and I was feeling like: "is that it?" I thought it was supposed to be very good and it did have a really promising start, but why was I not convinced? Then I continued to second episode and that was when I got really hooked up with the series. Every episode after that was truly amazing and it always had a cliffhanger ending, making it very difficult to stop.
For a series which had only 6 episodes, it did not feel very short. This was due to the fact that each episode had a duration of around 56-57 minutes and even the finale had 1 hour 15 minutes length. I was really satisfied with the finale episode since it covered all aspects and it had one of the most mind blowing conclusion in a series. Yes, this series had quite a lot of surprising twists and it even had something which I really did not expect to happen in the middle (I am very sure you would be too if you had seen this series).
As a series having the title Bodyguard, at first I thought it was probably based on the famous 1992 romantic thriller movie titled The Bodyguard starring Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston. However, it turned out to be a completely different thing. This one was a heavy drama, with complex characters, a little bit romance and having those multiple twists plus some really wonderfully done action sequence, & mind blowing conclusion. And this one was very serious with little to no humor at all throughout the series.
Now I am just a casual series watcher and I may not have the depth of critics' views about this series, but I could understand why it garnered positive reviews and even got a couple of Golden Globe nominations, i.e. Best TV Series and Best Actor (by the time I write this post, the winners have yet to be announced). I thought the series successfully made us captivated and feeling the suspense plus the acting of Richard Madden as the main lead was amazing. He was really convincing in playing the PTSD ex soldier having so many personal conflicts and problems. The supporting characters here (which was quite a lot) also made convincing performance which ensured the series was enjoyable.
Apart from those amazing aspects, the action sequence especially in episode 2 and 3 were really great. They were seriously done for a TV series and I thought the special effects were wonderful as well. One thing that really intrigued me was whether there would be a second season or would this be just a limited 1 short series, because of the ending. Whatever it is though, I thought this one was very worth the time to spend to watch.
Overall this would be a nice option series. Those looking for quality drama series and wanted to find out why it got the Golden Globe nomination, should definitely give it a try. While those looking for a thriller with some actions & drama about political struggle & terrorism could also give it a try and most likely you would enjoy it as well. If not for the story, at least for Richard Madden's performance. It is currently playing on Netflix.
