Finally another movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe that we could enjoy this year. My wife and I were among the audiences who flocked the theaters yesterday when the movie premiered. We even bought the tickets since last week where they were sold in advance. Anyway, due to some private matters we need to attend to, I left the office earlier and we were able to see the 6.20 PM show. Well let us get on with the movie now.
Brief Story Line
Set after the events of Avengers: End Game, Peter Parker (Tom Holland - The Lost City of Z etc) was struggling with his high school life & romance and felt a bit overwhelmed by the pressure of filling the void left by his mentor Tony Stark. So when his class was going for a school trip to Europe, he was so happy to take the holiday. Peter went with his best friend Ned (Jacob Natalon), MJ (Zendaya - Smallfoot etc) and few others, while leaving his aunt May (Marisa Tomei - What Women Want etc) and Happy (Jon Favreau - Couples Retreat etc) at home.
Unfortunately though, Peter's holiday did not go as planned, when Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson - Glass etc) and Agent Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders - How I Met Your Mother TV series etc) insisted that Peter help them fighting against a new threat together with a mysterious hero nicknamed Mysterio (Jake Gyllenhaal - The Day After Tomorrow, Brokeback Mountain etc).
So could Peter manage to juggle between his personal life as teenager and being a superhero? Find them all in this fun, exciting Spider-man movie.
End of Brief Story Line
Wow this was way better than I expected. The movie was a lot of fun and even funnier than the first one. Yes it might start off a bit too light, but because we already knew that Peter Parker was just a kid, we already knew it would be focusing on his high school life. In fact the story only became more like a superhero movie after the new threat started to show. And from then onwards the movie was really entertaining for me.
Being the first movie after that last Avengers film, it had a bit of burden to keep us excited and I think in this area it was quite successful in doing so. I was pretty psyched with what Marvel had in store after seeing this one, especially after the closing credit scenes (which had one in the middle and in the very end). And I thought it was a really surprise move on the way the story would proceed in future.
Btw, this movie had quite a number of action sequence which were done pretty well but to me the best of the best was the finale fights which were totally awesome! It was one of the most thrilling and intense action sequence I ever saw in Spider-man movies (probably at par with Spider-man 3 climax fight against the strong enemies). The special effects were truly great and well done, though once or twice the CGI were a bit obvious but they were not really big deal in the end. The sound effects were amazing, particularly in theater with Dolby Atmos system where we saw this. And I could also imagine that seeing this in IMAX might be even more spectacular.
As I said above, the story itself felt a bit light at first, but it really grew on us. My wife and I had a lot of fun watching high school students at their best. Peter's friend Ned (played so nicely by Jacob Batalon) got more screen time here and he was really the light of the bunch. Jake Gyllenhaal was also perfect in his Mysterio character. Plus I am glad to see they gave Jon Favreau more screen time as Happy, especially after Tony Stark gone. There were also other supporting cast as Peter's friends and teachers who added few fun scenes as well. The movie had some surprising twist though it could have been predicted if you already saw so many movies like my wife and I did.
Overall I thought this was a great Spider-man movie. It had sufficient and well done action sequences, a bunch of funny moments, a good enough story with some twists, plus wonderful special effects to make us really entertained. This one was quite a well executed superhero film with proper continuation from the earlier movies in MCU and it had a great ending to make us really excited to see the future movies. It was light enough & quite safe for all ages, and even with 129 minutes duration did not seem to be too long. I personally felt that this one was better than Spider-man: Homecoming. So just go and see this movie if you have not done so already and be entertained like us.
Happy watching!
