(2019) Crawl - A Survival Movie Suitable for Thrill-Seeking Audience

I saw this movie's trailer few times before and to be honest I was really excited at the prospect of seeing a survival movie like this one. So it was disappointing when the movie did not play in that many theaters including the one nearest to our home. But since I was keen to see it, we decided to go to another cinema even though it was a bit further. Well let us get on with the movie now.

Brief Story Line

A college student and swim athlete Haley Keller (Kaya Scodelario - Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar's Revenge, The Maze Runner trilogy etc) went back to her hometown in Florida to check up on his father Dave (Barry Pepper - Monster Trucks, Snitch etc) who had not responded to her texts despite their home being hit by category 5 hurricane.

It turned out that Dave was trapped in the basement of their old house with water kept on rising. And to make things worse, some alligators were crawling inside their house. Haley and Dave had to use their wits and everything they had to survive the catastrophe and the predators. So could they do so? Find them all in this very intense and suspenseful survival movie.

End of Brief Story Line

It has been quite some time since I saw a movie that was exciting and intense at the same time. And this one certainly one of them. This was a movie that focused on surviving the horrifying terror of alligators in the terrible condition of being in the middle of huge hurricane. It was a seemingly impossible situation to survive, which was the main attraction of the movie. During the whole 87 minutes duration of the film (which was actually pretty short), almost the entire movie was filled with nonstop terrifying moment.

For a survival movie, I think this one was quite successful in thrilling audience. My wife who was definitely not a fan of alligators, screamed quite a lot together with some of the other audience as well. Even I got shocked few times too. And the great sound effects from the cinema also increased the intensity we felt during the movie. Plus the visual effects of the alligators were also done pretty good, although once or twice the CGI could be spotted if you really take notice.

The performance of the 2 main leads were pretty decent. They provided sufficient performance to convince us the terror they felt. There were also other minor roles in the movie which added a bit of drama as well. This film did try to give some bits of attachment between the father and daughter which was not bad. My wife and I were pretty amused by the sarcastic comments these two sometimes gave which added a bit of humor to the film. The movie was directed by Alexandre Aja who had directed movies like The Hills Have Eyes, Piranha 3D, Horns etc. Btw, it was categorized for 17+ (R rating) which I thought was perfect, especially with some pretty graphic scenes. Oh and there was no mid or post end credit scene.

There is not a lot that can be said about this kind of movie except that if you are fans of such genre and wanted to have some thrill in the theater, then this one would definitely satisfy you. It was full of intense moment and even few spectacular stunts as well. With decent special effects and great sound effects, this one certainly would make you had good time. Just as long as you do not expect a deep story with strong drama (like in the case of The Shallows), then you would be fine. So if you can let go some seemingly impossible scenes in this type of movie, I believe you could enjoy the thrills like my wife and I did. But avoid the movie if you are easily traumatized by the gore scenes of alligators attack. The choice is yours.

Happy watching!
