(TV SERIES) Marvel's Jessica Jones Season 2 - An Unfortunately Disappointing Second Season of An Unusual Superhero

Many months ago, I have been meaning to write about season 1 of this series, as it shared the same universe as the other series of DaredevilLuke CageIron Fist which culminated to The Defenders. But somehow I forgotten to write it and when the second season premiered in March 2018, I focused my attention to it. Due to some reasons, I only managed to finish watching the whole season around last week. Now let us move on to the series.

Brief Story Line (Spoiler warning for those who have not seen Season 1)

Story was set after the first season concluded, where Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter - Confessions of a Shopaholic, Veronica Mars TV series etc) got the unnecessary attention after she killed the villain Kilgrave (David Tennant) who was able to control people's minds. Jessica preferred to be inconspicuous due to her work as Private Investigator. Her neighbor Malcolm (Eka Darville - Mr. Pip etc) considered himself as Jessica's assistant and also helped her in doing some ground work. Jessica's best friend Trish Walker (Rachael Taylor - Transformers, The Darkest Hour etc) was trying to get Jessica to find out the truth behind IGH, the organization that experimented on Jessica and made her become powerful.

Meanwhile, Jeri Hogarth (Carrie-Anne Moss - The Matrix trilogy, Pompeii etc) who sometimes would give assignments to Jessica was having her own problem at her law firm. She asked the help from another private investigator Pryce Cheng (Terry Chen - Continuum TV series etc) to resolve her problem which would affect Jessica's work. Things would become complicated when during the IGH investigation, a mysterious and very powerful woman (played by Janet McTeer - Tumbleweeds, Me Before You etc) tried to stop Jessica.

Another character that would play major role in Jessica's life was her new superintendent named  Oscar (J. R. Ramirez) who really did not like powered people like her. Plus a homeless woman called Inez (Leah Gibson) who seemed to be related to IGH. So could Jessica find out what really happened to her and the persons behind IGH? And who was the mysterious woman trying to hinder her investigation? Find them all in this season of the series.

End of Brief Story Line

Wow, season 2 of this series was really boring. The pace was sooooo slow that I was really bored and tempted to just stop watching it. Apart from 1 surprising twist in episode 6, there was no thrill, no suspense, not much action, even the investigations were not that interesting. This is truly a let down since season 1 was very intriguing as the villain (or I should say supervillain) of Kilgrave was a lot more interesting and difficult to beat, especially because his ability was mind control. In season 2, the villain was too grey and instead of worrying about how Jessica could beat her, the story become too much of a drama.

In addition to the super slow pace, the new characters (I have to disagree with critics this time) were not that appealing. The only character that interest me was Karl Malus (played nicely by Callum Keith Rennie - Jigsaw, Into the Forest etc), plus the character development of Malcolm. Even Jeri Hogarth's character development was boring, apart from the final scenes in the finale which was pretty awesome. And I did not enjoy Trish character development either. If anything, she became a really annoying person and her scene in the season finale which should have been a surprising one, was disappointingly guessable.

Another thing that I disliked was the ending of this season which did not leave a lot to be desired. There was nothing intriguing enough to make me want more. I got to say that this was disappointing seeing that I was hooked on the continuity of this whole Marvel universe and therefore I would not be able to not watch the future seasons, but unfortunately I do not have that much enthusiasm and anticipation for them. Oh, there was only 1 crossover character from the other series as well which make me did not have a sense of continuity with the rest of them.

One thing that I do like about the series was the performance of Krysten Ritter who I think was really spot on portraying such a dark, strong from the outside but vulnerable from the inside character. She was truly convincing during her darker moments or her doubts to handle the situation involving the villain. If not for her, I think the second season would have been a lot worse.

Overall, if you are a fan of darker Marvel series and want to see a different kind of hero, then you might be interested in seeing Jessica Jones. Personally though, I preferred the first season a lot more than this second season. But if you are not a fan of very slow paced series, then this would definitely not to your liking. The choice is yours.
